According to the dictionary the origin of "bric-a-brac" is French and its first known use was in the middle of the 19th century. This term is used to describe small things which can be used for decoration or collected items which are connected with sentimental value. The term derives from the french "à bric et à brac" which means "at random" and is not used anymore.
