WAMC Awards
As many of you know, Westchester Area Math Circle is a nonprofit organization that's run by volunteers only. We consider ourselves very lucky to have a great group of high school students who volunteer as workshop instructors and team coaches. To say that we couldn't run WAMC without them is an understatement.
This year, we decided to honor high school seniors who have made an outstanding and long term contribution to WAMC. Please join us in congratulating Grace Lin and Andrew Tu on receiving the WAMC Community Service and Leadership Award.
Grace Lin
Like many of our students, Grace first started attending WAMC in middle school as a student of one of our workshops. In spring of 2021, Grace proposed a new online summer program dedicated to AMC and MATHCOUNTS preparation. She not only designed the curriculum but also taught the workshop in the summer of 2021, 2022, and 2023, modifying the material along the way to better suit the students’ needs. In her sophomore year, Grace started volunteering as an instructor of the Introductory Problem Solving seminar, first online, and later in person as the lead instructor of our longest running workshop. Grace is a talented online and in-person instructor who genuinely cares about her students.
Additionally, Grace was both the captain and the coach of 2023 WAMC Girls in Math at Yale A team that placed 2nd overall, the highest achievement in WAMC's history. Grace is the captain of 2023 WAMC HMMT team and there is no doubt that she will be able to build on her previous leadership skills, extensive math knowledge, and her own experience as a valuable member of the 2022 WAMC HMMT team that won last year’s competition.
Andrew Tu
Andrew joined the WAMC community in 5th grade. Starting as an instructor for the Introductory Problem Solving seminar in 2020, this year marks his 4th year as a teacher at WAMC. He has been leading the Advanced Problem Solving workshop since September last year. Andrew takes the initiative to select appropriate materials and design the curriculum for each workshop, aligning them with the ongoing math competitions, the whole time maintaining an open communication with both the students and parents of the WAMC teams.
Additionally, Andrew demonstrates his exceptional leadership and mathematical prowess on a number of WAMC's competition teams. He played a pivotal role on WAMC's HMMT team last November, leading the team to the remarkable first place overall ranking. As the team captain of WAMC's PUMaC team, Andrew led the team to 6th place on the team round at PUMaC 2022*. Currently Andrew is the captain of the WAMC A Team for the upcoming MMATHS competition. We extend our best wishes for his success in MMATHS and all his future endeavors.
