The purpose of this project is to learn about the impact of Navajo Preparatory Schools impact on their past students. With the recent effort by the U.S. Department of the Interior to establish the Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative led by Secretary Deborah Haaland, her effort is to reveal the historical traumas that lingers among our people. Therefore, it is in our best interest to respond to the call for Secretary Haaland’s Federal Indian Boarding School initiative.
Through the Navajo Prep Oral History project, we will learn the magnitude of the impact of federal Indian boarding school upon our people, specifically our alumni. We must discover the school’s best practices that have helped to heal from the boarding school traumas. This oral history project is intended to create a tool to address these realities. This project will focus on the legacy of developing strong and powerful leaders for the Navajo Nation. The oral history project will be focused on interviews with alumni and their families.
