What is this thing?

The Wells Street Jazz Project had rather humble beginnings as an attempt to piece together groups to perform jazz numbers for the University of Michigan Mathematics Department annual non-holiday gathering. In 2008, the effort finally produced a group with a full rhythm section--a viable group. Things went so well that December, that the group decided to continue on following the initial performance.

We're currently sticking to jazz standards, which tend to fall into material that Art Blakey & the Jazz Messangers might do, although, its doubtful that anything would be "off the table".

Our group consists of UM staff, faculty, students and spouses--basically, anyone crazed enough to step in front of 200 mathematicians for 20 minutes to play jazz for the fun of it.

We hope that things progress to the point where we can play out once in a while, naturally, in a small place, likely off the beaten path.

The Wells St. Project is currently looking for a bass player and a trumpet player to round out our sound. Let us know if you are interested!
