1669 Robert Cavelier LaSalle, a French general and explorer, arrived at the east coast of Irondequoit Bay.
1687 Marquis de Denonville came to Irondequoit Bay to start his famous march into the Seneca Territory.
1718 The French established Fort de Sables (Fort of the Sands) on the sandbar at Irondequoit Bay outlet.
1741 The Seneca Indians deeded a twenty-mile wide stretch of land, which included the present Webster Beach Park, to the British.
1756 Sir William Johnson camped on Webster's shore en route from Schenectady and Oswego to Fort Niagara.
1776 The Declaration of Independence was signed and the Revolutionary War began. Webster contributed her share of men.
1778 Phelps and Gorham purchase was made. Six million acres, later known as the Genesee Country (including Webster), was purchased from Massachusetts.
1790 Land set aside at corner of Ridge Road and Maple Drive (originally named Cemetery Road) in West Webster for a cemetery, which has been in continuous use.
1800 Salmon were plentiful in Four Mile Creek.
1805 Caleb Lyon settled at Lyon's Point, present Nine Mile Point on Lake Ontario. Settlers from the New England States were making homes in Webster.
1806 A grist mill and a sawmill were built on Four Mile Creek, north of Lake Road, near Nine Mile Point.
Abraham Foster settled at Lyon’s Point.
1810 Town of Penfield was organized. Webster was originally in Penfield and was referred to as North Penfield.
The first school taught in No.12 District, North Penfield.
1812 The first inn, Letts’ Tavern, opened at the corner of Webster-Fairport and State Roads.
The War of 1812 began.
A skirmish occurred with the British off Nine Mile Point and the Ridge Road.
Webster was along the mainline of travel for the battles around the Great Lakes during the War of 1812.
Spears Tavern opened at the current 19 West Main Street location.
1814 Methodism recorded growth in North Penfield (Webster).
1816 Frost recorded every month except July. The year was known as
"The Year of the Cold Summer".
"Bee Hive," an inn on the Ridge Road at West Webster, was built to accommodate the stagecoach.
An attempt was made to encourage the growing of mulberry in Webster for the silkworm industry.
1818 A stagecoach route through Webster was established between “Rochesterville” and Oswego.
The Post Office for Webster was located on The Ridge Road West. It was North Penfield, and part of Ontario County, at this time.
1819 A group of Mississauga Indians from Canada settled near the Ridge in the eastern part of West Webster.
1820 Milling industry was at its height in Webster, continuing through 1825.
1823 Quinine was produced as a standard remedy for all ills.
1825 Webster Rural Cemetery was organized on The Ridge Road.
A Congregational Society was organized.
1829 Corning built a general store and long served the public.
The Congregational Society became the Presbyterian Society.
1830 The first brick store was built in Webster Village.
Buttermilk Tavern and brick store were built at the corner of The Ridge Road and Five Mile Line Road.
1831 The Presbyterians erected a small edifice on South Avenue, the first church within Webster boundaries.
1832 The Baptist Society built its first church on South Avenue.
The Methodists built a church costing $3,000, known as "The Center" or "Old Church", on the Ridge Road West
1835 An elaborate home was built by John Whiting on the land that is now Webster Beach Park. A portion of this building was later used in building The Pavilion at Webster Park.
1840 Webster (previously referred to as North Penfield) separated from Penfield. It was named after Daniel Webster, the great orator and statesman. Byron Woodhull was elected the first supervisor.
1842 The population in Webster was 2,235.
1844 The Universalist Church, built of cobblestone, was erected on the Ridge Road West in the Village. The church closed in 1925, having been without a pastor for five years, but the building is still in use at 109 West Main Street.
1845 Burnett Brickyard was started on Lake Road
1846 A cobblestone school building in District No. 7 was built on Schlegel Road. It was used as a school until 1943 and has since been converted to a private home at 1352 Schlegel Road.
1849 "Boston Church" was erected on the west side of Town Line Road (Monroe-Wayne County Line Road), opposite Boston Road. This was the second Methodist church in town. As Methodist churches consolidated, this building was eventually vacated by the congregation. It was burned in 1965 to clear the lot it stood upon.
Spears Tavern became Russel Hotel.
1850 A Methodist Church was built at the "Gravel" (West Webster).
A cobblestone schoolhouse was built on The Ridge Road in the village.
A town water pump in the center of the four corners in Webster Village furnished water to many families and travelers.
1851 The Union Cemetery was laid out, north of the Ridge, on Nine Mile Point Road.
1855 The Baptist Society removed the original building and erected one of cobblestone at 59 South Avenue.
The Presbyterian Church at 77 Main Street East was dedicated.
1860 An early Evangelical Church was erected on Salt Road.
Webster Academy opened on Corning Park.
The First Methodist Episcopal Church was built in West Webster at 570 Ridge Road.
The Methodist Episcopal Church was built at 75 West Main Street. This is now the brick “Street of Shops” building in the village. The Methodists had four churches in town at this time, all served by one pastor.
The Mississauga Indian group left West Webster to return to Canada.
1861 The Holy Trinity Catholic Church was erected 1456 Ridge Road East.
West Webster contained 40 houses.
The Civil War began.
1863 Webster Lodge No. 538 Free and Accepted Masons was organized.
1865 The population in Webster was 2,775 with 12 school districts.
Civil War veterans were returning home from war.
1867 The first bridge was built across the outlet of the Irondequoit Bay to complete the road across the sandbar.
1868 The Lutheran Church was erected at the corner of the Ridge and Five Mile Line Roads.
1874 The Free Methodist Church was built at 525 Ridge Road in West Webster. The building was eventually sold to another church and is now a child care center.
1875 Episcopal services were conducted in the vicinity of Nine Mile Point.
Lake Ontario Shore Railroad began and was sold to the RW&O (Rome, Watertown, and Ogdensburg) - nicknamed "Hojack".
1876 The RW&O RR was completed and operating.
Webster Union Free District School was built on South Avenue.
1877 The first furniture and undertaking businesses were formed.
1878 The first baseball team of Webster was organized.
1880 Webster Grange No. 436 was organized.
The Women's Christian Temperance Society was organized at the Baptist Church.
1881 The first town library opened in a private home.
1888 The community of Forest Lawn began.
A local newspaper, "The Webster Star," was established.
The first high school baseball nine was organized.
Dec 1888 Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church dedicated a new church at 131 West Main Street, to accommodate their growing congregation.
1890 Bicycles appeared in town.
1891 Rome Watertown & Ogdensburg Railroad was leased to the New York Central and Hudson Railroad.
1892 Monroe Casket Co. was organized.
1893 Webster Basket Company began operating in town.
The Town pump was removed from the center of the Village and the well was covered.
1895 Webster Lodge No. 742, I.O.O.F. was formed.
1896 An addition was built to the Webster Union Free School.
1899 The Webster Herald was established (still in print, 2019).
Dr. James E. Smith became Webster’s first veterinarian.
Maccabee Hall was erected in West Webster at 575 Ridge Road.
The Grange Hall was built at 58 East Main Street (now Harmony House).
Webster Chap. No. 171 Order of the Eastern Star was organized.
1900 Dr. Byron Palmer became the first practicing dentist in Webster.
Many district schools were consolidated, enlarging Webster District No. 1.
Webster Literary Society was formed.
Webster Rural Free Delivery service was started.
Webster Bank (Jayne and Mason Bank) opened on South Avenue.
Rochester and Sodus Bay Trolley (Royal Blue Line) made its first run through town on June 5 over the Rochester & Sodus Bay Electric Railroad. It left Webster for Rochester, stopping at West Webster, Glen Haven, and Main Street, en route to the city.
1901 Bell Telephone Company started their exchange in the Frank M. Jones block.
Dr. John Dunning, a lifelong resident of Webster, died at his home on November 1 of apoplexy.
1903 Webster Union Free School was enlarged again.
1904 Woodman of the World Lodge was organized.
1905 Webster Village was incorporated. The first mayor was George Hallauer.
1906 Acetylene gas lights were used to light the village streets.
Webster Fire Department was organized.
The Discovery Club was organized.
1907 The United Methodist Church was built at 169 East Main Street.
John Malcho started the first regular milk delivery service.
1908 Webster established a water system in the village.
The Candy Kitchen, sweet shop, and teen hangout opened.
1911 The first Webster Village Hall and Fire House were built on the south side of West Main Street.
Webster Lodge, Loyal Order of Moose No. 777 organized.
1912 Electricity was installed in Webster.
1913 Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) erected a fountain at the four corners of the village.
1914 Ladies Catholic Benevolent Association (LCBA) of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church was organized.
Rome Watertown & Ogdensburg Railroad ceased to exist and came under the single corporation title of New York Central Railroad.
1915 Webster's first paid public nurse, Miss Eleanor Smith, started duty.
A Community Chorus was organized.
1917 United States entered the World War (WWI) and Webster boys
enlisted.
1919 Loyal Rebecca Lodge No. 586 was organized.
1924 A new high school building, shaped like the letter W (the present Edward W. Spry Building), was erected on South Avenue and Sanford Street. It opened for classes in September 1925.
1926 The old high school building and site (opened as Webster Union Free District School) was purchased by the Masonic Order.
1929 After a rash of burglaries, Homer Pulver, a Webster resident, made an application to the Village Board for the position of full-time policeman. Police service was established in Webster Village and Homer was hired at a salary of $50 monthly.
The last run of the Rochester & Sodus Bay Trolley in June was followed by the first bus of the Rochester Transit System.
Webster Public Library was opened to the public in the high school library.
The "Corning House" was opened as a hospital.
1930 Tornado-like wind storm caused great damage in town. Trees were uprooted and traffic was interrupted for hours.
1934 Very severe winter. The temperature fell to -25 degrees. Lake Ontario froze about 10 miles out from shore. The car ferry, Ontario 2, was trapped overnight in the ice. Many area fruit trees were killed.
1935 The Village of Webster constructed its first complete sewage system.
1936 The Webster Water Service was enlarged and the first well was drilled on DeWitt Road for Webster's new water system.
Rochester Gas & Electric erected sodium streetlights on Ridge Road East from the village to Holy Trinity in October.
1937 West Webster was illuminated with twenty-five 40-watt streetlights in February.
Webster Beach Park came into being along Lake Ontario.
August rainstorms caused flood conditions throughout town.
1938 Cemetery Road in West Webster was renamed Maple Drive.
The Cutler summer home on the Lake Road was presented to the Boy Scout organization as "Camp Cutler" by Mrs. Warren Cutler.
1940 Observance of Webster's 100th anniversary.
Postmaster at West Webster resigned after 35 years of continuous service.
1941 US entered World War II after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
1942 The trolley tracks on Main Street were dug up.
1948 In May, the schools were centralized as Webster's buildings were combined with Penfield Districts 6 (Harris Road near Allen Road), 9 (Dayton’s Corner - Creek Street and Plank Road), 10 (Plank Road near Five Mile Line Road), 11 (Penfield Center Road and Webster-Fairport Road), and 13 (Roseland - Plank Road and Hogan Road).
1950 Earl Smith and Carl Lotze built the first public funeral home at 10 Lapham Park.
Sep 1950 St. Margaret Mary’s Church in Irondequoit was dismantled and reassembled as St. Rita’s Parish, at 1008 Maple Drive.
1951 West Webster Elementary School opens
Nov 1952 A fire at the Webster Bowling Hall on North Avenue destroyed the building.
1954 The Youth Commission, predecessor of the Recreation Department, was started.

May 1955 St. Martin’s Evangelical Lutheran Church was dedicated at 813 Bay Road.
Sep 1955 Eastway Plaza opened with 24 stores. Situated in Penfield, near the Webster border, it drew many shoppers from Webster.

Oct 1983 Esther Dunn died at the age of 82. Former Webster teacher for 38 years, town historian and author of “Webster Through the Years,” Miss Dunn was born in 1901 and lived her entire life on the family property at 839 Lake Rd.

Mar 1986 West Webster Fire Department celebrated its 60th anniversary.
“The Millionaire Game” debuted. Webster Band boosters sold the Monopoly-like game featuring local businesses as a fund-raiser.

Jan 1991 Commercial Street fire spreads to old Canning Factory building at 48 Commercial Street. The fire started in the 3-story historic Hallauer building at 44 Commercial St. The Hallauer Building, built in 1882, was the oldest building destroyed in the fire. John Hallauer & Sons operated the world’s largest evaporated apple business from this location.
Mar 1991 Ice storm devastated western NY. The Greater Rochester area hit hardest with 1.5” of freezing rain. 135,000 Rochester area homes were without power.
Jun 1991 Xerox opened a 40,000 sq ft color research facility in Webster.
Jul 1991 Webster Central School District Board of Education sold Dayton’s Corners School to the Town of Penfield.

May 2002 New Webster library opened in Webster Plaza. The new library is more than twice the size of the previous location in the Van Ingen building, where it had been housed for almost 30 years.
Feb 2003 Webster Comfort Care Home opened, providing hospice-based care in a comfortable home-like setting.
Apr 2003 12 years after the devastating ice storm of 1991, another ice storm damaged Webster and 13 surrounding counties.
Aug 2003 Armed robbery at Xerox Federal Credit Union. One person died from a robber’s gunshot and one was injured. The case remained unsolved until 2016.
Jan 2004 Town budget eliminated funding for swimming at North Ponds Park. The sandy beach at the south end of the large pond will be covered with dirt and grass will be planted.
Jun 2004 Town purchased almost 120 acres off Whiting Road from the Gosnell family to be used as a passive nature preserve and trail system.
2004 The first tenants moved into retail space at Towne Center Plaza (at
the NW corner of Holt and Ridge Roads). Most spaces are occupied by summer 2005 and occupancy was full by spring 2006.
June 2005 Log Cabin Lodge at Finn Park opened.
July 2005 Recent census shows Webster growth rate is greatest in Monroe County.
Sept 2005 Webster Aquatic Center opened next to H. W. Schroeder High School. It features an Olympic-sized pool and field house.
Nov 2005 St. Ann’s opened Cherry Ridge senior facility. It can accommodate 225 residents in 1 and 2 bedroom cottages, 1 and 2 bedroom apartments, assisted living, and memory care.
Nov 2007 Merz garage at 1186 West Ridge Road closed. It had been at that location since 1936.
Jan 2008 Severe windstorm swept through western NY with 75 mph winds. West Webster was especially hard hit by downed trees.
Apr 2008 Lipinski Brothers Hardware closes after 53 years. Opened in 1955 by Ted and Bob Lipinski.
Jan 2010 Town of Webster acquired land and recreation building from Xerox on Chiyoda Drive off Phillips Road. Chiyoda Drive transitioned from a private road to a town road.
Mar 2010 Fitness center opened on Chiyoda Drive. Parks and Recreation Department moved from Ridgecrest Center. The facility includes a fitness room, gymnasium, 4 lit softball fields, 2 lit tennis courts, and an outdoor basketball court.
Nov 2010 “Webster” landscaped living bush sign with stone mosaic sailboat by the east end of Irondequoit Bay Bridge was rebuilt after being destroyed by vandals. This living sign had welcomed people to Webster for 20 years.
Oct 2011 Expansion of Recreation Center on Chiyoda Drive completed.
Dec 2012 Firefighters responding to house and car fire on Lake Road at the sandbar were ambushed by the armed owner of the burning home. William Spengler, convicted of murdering his grandmother with a hammer in 1980 had acquired guns illegally. Early on Christmas Eve morning, he killed his sister, Cheryl Spengler, and then started fires in the house they shared and in a car parked in the driveway. He then hid across Lake Road waiting for first responders to appear. Spengler shot and killed Mike Chiapperini and Thomaz Kaczokwa. Joseph Hofstetter and Theodore Scardino were severely wounded by gunfire. John Ritter, an off-duty Greece police officer on his way to work, was also injured while helping to secure the scene. Spengler eventually shot and killed himself. Seven homes were destroyed by the spreading fires. Firefighters
were unable to approach to control the fires, due to Spengler’s ambush.
Sept 2013 Monroe County Water Authority opened a new 40-acre facility on Basket Road. A 50 million gallon/day water treatment facility, it is the last piece of the “East Side Water Supply Project.” Untreated water from Lake Ontario is pumped into the facility from the intake location, one mile from shore and 50 feet below the surface.
Dec 2013 Village of Webster officially changed from water pumped from the well fields on DeWitt Road to the county water supply.
2014 West Webster Post Office moved to Mobil gas station at the corner of Bay and Ridge Roads when Knucklehead Craft Brewing took over the former Seitz Deli.
