Nutrition and Cancer Prevention

Warren B. Karp, Ph.D., D.M.D.

Professor Emeritus

The Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University

There is good, evidenced-based information available about the relationship of food to cancer prevention and recurrence.  Unfortunately, most Americans are not aware of what the science and evidence shows because of all the nutrition MISinformation in the media and social media.  Most of this misinformation centers on products, supplements and foods being marketed and advertised...not a good source of accurate and reliable information.  Americans are taking their anti-cancer vitamins while being overweight and chargrilling foods in their outdoor HGTV patio "kitchens."

When you consider the entire area of "Nutrition and Cancer" three questions generally emerge:

            1) Can certain foods or dietary supplements PREVENT or CAUSE cancer?

            2) Can certain foods or dietary supplements CURE cancer or PREVENT ITS SPREAD?

            3) Is nutrition and diet therapy important during cancer TREATMENT?

This discussion focuses on QUESTION #1

Can you REALLY prevent OR cause cancer by eating certain foods or taking certain dietary supplements?  The media and food industry support that idea.  What does the evidenced-based science show?

In addition, I have written a number of newspaper and magazine columns on nutrition over the last few years.  The target population for these columns are people in the general population. Here are some columns relating to cancer nutrition.  Please feel free to share them with family, friends, patients and clients.  It takes a culture to be healthy.
