The Watson family in Australia is connected to the Cantwell & Armstrong families by way of Irish and English convicts who were transported to the colony of New South Wales.
George & Charlotte Watson were the ones who brought their children to Australia on 3rd May 1884 on the ship "Sirsa" which docked at the imigration port of Maryborough Queensland.
My oldest Watson family member researched to date is:
William Watson b. 1771/1772 at Yately, Hampshire England. He married Sarah Ford about 1809 in Surrey England. They had a son:- George Owen Watson b. 1828 at Kennington Surrey, England. he died 1901 at Balmain NSW Australia. He married, (1) Charlotte Smith. (2) Jane Bartram, nee Counter.
George and Charlotte had 8 children:-
David b. 1866. He died 1895 at Balmain NSW Australia
Sarah Ellen b. 1866. She married Stephen J Stanbridge 1888 at Wollongong NSWAustralia and died 1964 at St. Leonards NSW Australia
William b. 1872. He died 1948 At Lismore NSW Australia
James William b. 1874. Married Mary Elizabeth McKeon 1893 at Rozelle NSW Australia. He died 1924 at Balmain NSW Australia

Irene Elizabeth Cantwell is a direct descendant of Pierce Cantwell, a convict transported to Australia with his brother James on the convict ship "Blackwell"

(The baptism certificate for James Cantwell gives name as Judith Laffan, not Julia Laffin)

Notes for convicts Pierce & James Cantwell:-
Pierce Cantwell and his brother James were both convicted in Ireland of the manslaughter of Police Sergeant Feeny on 15th August 1834 and in March 1835 were sentenced to transportation to Australia in on the convict ship "Blackwell", Pierce was sentenced to "Life in the Colony" and James was sentenced to "7 Years " in the Colony.
At the time of his sentence Pierce's occupation was "Coal Miner"
Between 1859 and 1861 he was the Licensee of the Crown and Anchor Inn at Swan Street Morpeth.
The following is an extract from the Sydney Morning Herald under the heading Morpeth things to see dated 8th February 2004.
Slab Cottage:-
"Just around the corner in Green Street Morpeth is an old slab cottage dating back to the (sic) 1820s ( the cottage would not have been built until the 1840,s) which has been restored and relocated to this site. Now housing Morpeth Pottery it was built by Pierce Cantwell who initially carted the sandstone from Fig Tree Hill into town. He later owned the Royal Hotel which is still standing. "
In 1860 Both Pierce and Eliza were witnesses at the trial of Elizabeth McGinley. They were listed as Inn Keepers.
On 21st December 1844 Pierce was granted a ticket of leave and on the 9 February 1853 the ticket of leave was cancelled due to his being illegally out of the district.
On 27 Jan 1846 he was admitted to Newcastle Goal from Maitland. Sent to trial for stealing 600 pounds of wool and sentenced to two years in irons at No. 3 stockade Newcastle.
James,s occupation at the time of his sentence was "Tailors Boy" He was listed as being a Bulloock Driver in NSW. He was given a Ticket of Freedom 42/475 on 25th March 1840 35/2320

Mary Ann Russell is the grandaughter of convict William Armstrong
William was born c 1793 Dublin, Ireland. He married Eleanor Hall Nee Jobling. 1845 Kelso NSW Australia. It was her 4th marriage. ( see details in the "Hall" family below )
William and Eleanor had 4 children:-

Elizabeth. 1839 - 1924. Married James Russell 1862 at Forbes NSWAustralia. Daughter Mary Ann married Edward Edward Thomas Cantwell

William Armstrong was a shoemaker born in Dublin about 1794. He was convicted of stealing shoes in the Dublin City Sessions in 1834 and sentenced to "Life" imprisonment and transportation to New South Wales.
He arrived on the convict ship "Hero" at Port Jackson ,Sydney on 31st August 1835.
At the time of his trial he was married with three children, two males and one female, he would never see them again.
He was assinged to William Wedge Darke, Surveyor.
In 1843 he was indicted for killing Richard Cawthorne at Bathurst New South Wales and was given a lenient sentence of 24 hours in Bathurst Goal for killing in self defence.
William was granted a "Ticket of Leave" No. 45/2120 and he had four children with female convict Eleanor Hall nee Jobling (mentioned below) but was not given permission to marry her until 1844. They eventually married in 1845.
On the 20th December 1849 it is believed that William was possibly murdered by another person with whom he and his wife had been drinking.
Newspaper reports of the incident were reported in the Sydney Morning Herald on 21st December 1849

Eleanor Hall nee Jobling; Details of her marriage to William Armstrong set out above.
This was her 4th marriage. Her previous marriages were:-
Isaac Hall 1825.
William Grey 1835 (also a convict) They had a son William. He was given the last name "Hall" born 1836
Unknown c 1837. ( She had a daughter from this marriage named Eleanor and she was given the last name of Hall ) born 1837 at the Bathurst Work Factory NSW
Eleanor Hall, (nee Jobling) was born on 20th June 1807 at Durham England.
Her ancestors were:-
Thomas Jobling & Eleanor Young ( parents). George Jobling & Jane ? ( grandparents)
On the 18th October 1830 she was tried at the Durham Quarter Sessions and convicted of Larceny, she was sentenced to two months hard labour detention.
On 4th April 1832 she was convicted at Newcastle Upon Tyne Quarter Sessions for "Pledging" ( Pawning) and sentenced to seven years transportation to New South Wales.
She sailed aboard the convict ship "Fanny" on the 29th July 1832 and arrived in Sydney on 2nd February 1833. She was seven months pregnant and gave birth during the voyage to her son John Hall on 15th September 1832.
The Reverend Samuel Marsden refused an application made by Eleanor on 9th November 1833 to mary John Booth. The application was made using her married name of "Hall" It was refused owing to her shipping indent being noted as being married
.The medical journal of the ship's Surgeon, James Logan records details of her fragile health, she was not expected to live through the voyage.
"Folios 16-18 case No.15 Eleanor Hall, age 25, convict, taken ill off the Cape; sick or hurt, Scorbutus; put on sick list 15th October 1832, discharged 6th November 1832, cured, she was expected to expire before the ship came to anchor at Simon's Bay.
The ships Company was sent ashore for some vegetables and other refreshments. This patient ate but very little, from this date 25 October she and other Scorbutic patients recovered and at the end of seven or eight days there was no one on the sick list."
In 1837 she was assigned to William Lawson of Bathurst. ( Of the first crossing of the Blue Mountains fame. See image below)
A Ticket of Leave 38/626 was granted to her on 8th April 1838 and then cancelled on 31st July 1838 for disorderly conduct
She was given a Certificate of Freedom No.42/0259 on 18th February 1842
Eleanor died on 9th February 1850 and according to news reports in the Sydney Morning Herald, her death was possibly due to an over indulgence of alcohol. She did not know that her husband William had been buried
