South Africa

So far, South Africa has been my favourite...

Ahh, South Africa. I have now been to South Africa on two separate occasions. Both were work-related trips that i was fortunate enough to be able to add personal trips onto. It's really the only way to travel - someone else picks up the major costs, and you add on all the fun stuff.

South Africa is a spectacularly beautiful country. The people are amazingly friendly, the landscapes are varied and amazing, and of course there's the wilderness and the wildlife. I have been fortunate enough to have gone on safari three times during my two trips, and they certainly rank up there as highlights of my life to date. It's indescribeable to be sitting in a vehicle, five or ten feet away from an elephant or a rhino. On my last trip, I even did one of the walking tours, and was on foot, only 20 or 30 feet away from a rhino. It's an amazing experience.

On these pages I'm hoping to capture some of my thoughts and experiences from my trips to South Africa. I kept pretty detailed journals and will transpose some of those notes over to this site.

A quick geography lesson...

2001: Johannesburg, Krugar, Durban and Sodwana Bay

2005: Pretoria and Krugar Park

2006: Kruger Park

Both Johannesburg and Pretoria are in the north eastern part of the country. The two cities are about an hour's drive apart, connected by a major freeway. Kruger Park lies further east, about 5-6 hours from both cities. It runs along the length of the South Africa/Mozambique boarder.
