I found Calvin Elsass' hand written notes (typed below) reflecting on his WMC career when he retired May 1, 1974.
Man retiring after a career of employment extending for a period of over 50 years.
Calvin C. Elsass born August 12, 1907 the son of the late Samuel G. Elsass and Mrs. Henrietta Elsass who makes her home with him and his wife Mary K. His wife is the former Mary Katherine Winemiller who he married August 12, 1934.
He started his career with The Wapakoneta Machine Co. after being hired by the late Carl D. Fischer in 1923 for the school vacation months as errand boy and helper in the machine department. He worked again in the school vacation months of 1924 as helper, and operated a power hack saw in the machine department.
After graduation from Blume High School he again started employment June 1st 1925. He worked at various simple machining operations on shaper, drill press, milling machine, engine lathe and universal grinding machine.October 1925 he was transferred to the office to assist the late Frank P. Schemmel in making drawings and other office duties. Late in the Fall of 1927 the office was moved to its new and present location. His work was the same with some added duties. In the early 1930's when he was appointed assistant to the late Emil J. Fischer who was acting Superintendent in addition to being Executive Sec.-Treasurer had charge of a sales territory which covered in the late Spring, Summer and Fall months.
He served in this capacity until the Fall of 1945 when he again went into the office as manager of the general office.
He was elected to the Board of Directors in January 1953 which position he held until retirement.
He became Asst. Secretary in April 1957 still serving as Office Manager.
He became Executive Secretary in July 1960 at the passing of the late Emil J. Fischer.
He was elected Executive V. P. and Executive Secretary in June 1968.
In anticipation of his retirement Paul E. Rickert was selected as his successor and was elected to the Board of Directors effective April 1, 1974. Paul was subsequently elected by the Directors to succeed as Executive Sec. and Executive V. P. effective April 1, 1974.
Calvin after having the month of April for a vacation officially enters retirement May 1 to his country farm home on Freyburg Road. Here he expects to enjoy his hobbies of fishing, repairing, tinkering and woodworking.
