Thoughts on AI
17th July 2026. I've been using AI (Artificial Intelligence) in my work for several months now, mainly CoPilot and Google Gemini. Others in our organisation use Claude. The results are mixed. Mostly it saves time and effort. It can write all kinds of code and make interesting and varied suggestions. Sometimes it confirms my thoughts, other times it suggests something different and I say to myself "what didn't I think of that?". It draws on a wide net of information out there "on the webs". However, there have been a number of times where it has led me astray, wasted a chunk of time "chasing ghosts", confidently presenting ideas and "facts" that were just plain wrong, or were never going to work. There have been times when I've been suspicious of a confident suggestion, and after trying it out and it not working, then consulting official documentation, only to find the AI was completely wrong.
All that aside, overall it seems to be of benefit. It's not ready (yet?) to replace humans, even in IT where I work. Humans can evaluate and know what is correct and what isn't, in a way that AI doesn't.
There is still one trait humans have that AI does not.. volition! Knowing what is needed and when. Knowing what's right, wrong, correct, incorrect, and why. Knowing what to do and why. Self-starting.
The biggest danger is agentic AI.. yes let AI help us think, and discover knowledge. But do not let it press the buttons or pull the levers. It doesn't understand the dangers.
