I am a physician (pathologist) turned artist, creating installations with conventional and unconventional media.
At its core, my work is an attempt to obtain security in an unsafe crowded world, to distinguish fact from fantasy, and to deal with current environmental/political realities. I like to find beauty in unexpected places, which may lead to an appreciation of the seamier side of the human condition.
In my abstract paintings I explore the boundaries between objects and their environment, how one influences the other. Another avenue of exploration centers around recyclable materials. Specifically, I put varying amounts and combinations of paint inside small plastic bags of the type often seen in the produce section of the supermarket. Each bag is uniquely manipulated into whatever shape, color design, or texture as needed. Depending on the amount and variety of colors added, method of dispersal of the paint within the bag, and other tangible and intangible factors, the result is never the same, and often worthy of notice. These pieces are often displayed within light boxes, as the backlit light heightens appreciation of the amazing detail. I also make abstract sculptures from my personal plastic waste. These unique pieces can be combined with others to create larger installations.
Environmental degradation and other problems of our complicated time weigh on me. As I work to define who I am as an artist, I feel a responsibility to participate in conversations that define our era. By working with single-use leftover plastic bottles, wrappings, etc. that are in every household. I come to grips with the plastic littering our cities and oceans by noticing its ubiquity and permanence. I acknowledge both the good and deleterious aspects of our plasticized lives. There is satisfaction in rescuing plastic from the recycle bin, or worse, from becoming street or ocean litter. Elevating it into artwork references our confused political and environmental situation, but might also reveal undiscovered possibilities. Less
