My name is Veronica Wagenet.
I earned my B.A. at the University of California - Berkeley in 2008 in Anthropology (emphasized on education and archaeology). Before that I earned an A.A. in Liberal Arts from Mendocino College in 2006. While attending Mendocino College in Northern California, I also worked on a TEFL Certificate so I could teach ESL abroad through an online certificate program located in the U.K. I received my TEFL Certificate in 2004.
My interest in teaching ESL started at an early age. When I was around 9 years old, my parents took me to an English Immersion Camp, which was a program through UC Berkeley's Extension Program. When I was old enough to work, I became a staff member. My job was to engage in conversations with students from all parts of the world, but the majority were from East Asia, such as Taiwan, S.Korea, and Japan. Thus, my interest in Asian culture grew along with my passion for helping others communicate better.
My second language is Mandarin, Chinese. I studied Mandarin at the National University of Taiwan through their language school for 1 year. The classes were all intensive, so I improved very quickly, and now I can understand everyday conversations in Zhongwen. Moreover, my specialty is teaching ESL to Mandarin speakers. I have also studied Japanese as well, but my level of Nihongo is at a basic level.
I began my career as an ESL teacher as a substitute teacher during the summer of 2007 in Taichung, Taiwan R.O.C. I worked at a private English after-school program called, Giraffe School. I taught conversational English to elementary school students there.
Then in 2008, after I received my B.A. from Berkeley, I went back to Taiwan to teach. This time I was hired at a private middle school to teach science related English in the school's ESL enrichment program. I also taught a reading class. I had over 300 students total.
In 2009 I was hired at another after-school program, called 5th Avenue American School in Taichung, Taiwan. At 5th Ave. I taught reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills to elementary-aged students. I worked at 5th Ave. for a year. While teaching at 5th Ave. I also tutored some people in my free time. I had two regular students, both adults; one college student and one English teacher.
During 2009, I also worked for an ESL magazine doing voice recordings to go with their dialogues, as well as acting in a few videos. The magazine company is called, All People. Here is a link to one of the videos I was in: http://vimeo.com/27474815
Now that I have been back in the U.S. I have taught a group of Chinese engineers for a software company (SugarCRM Inc.) in Silicon Valley. I have taught Koreans, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Mexicans, Spaniards, Germans, French, Ethiopians, Brazilians, Russians, Polish, Saudi Arabians, Swiss,Taiwanese, and many more people English as a Second Language. They have all really liked the material I use to teach with. Additionally, I have taught for a year at a private adult English language school in Campbell. There, I taught Intensive English as a Second Language classes. The classes were each a month long and the students came from all over the world to learn. Additionally, I have taught at the well-known organization, THINK TANK Learning Inc. based in Santa Clara. There, I tutored 3 junior high school students from China English as a Second Language for their history and science classes.
I am available to teach classes to employees at your company's headquarters or tutor individuals privately. Please go to the "Contact Information" page to contact me.
