This page was created to share recordings of pianist and teacher Vivien Harvey Slater. Vivien taught at Colgate University where she was Pianist-in-Residence for nearly 40 years.
A child prodigy, Vivien played the piano in public from approximately 1926 to 2008. She made her orchestral debut at age 13, and at 15, began studying with Severin Eisenberger at the Cincinnati Conservatory. She made her New York Town Hall debut in 1952, Washington, D.C. in 1946, and performed throughout North America and Europe over a long career. Her orchestral appearances included the New York Philharmonic-Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, and Buffalo Philharmonic. Vivien recorded eight albums and gave numerous radio broadcasts. She published a number of her own compositions, some of which were performed by the Cleveland Orchestra and Rochester Philharmonic (José Iturbi, conducting). Her five LP albums of the music of Carl Czerny were widely acclaimed in musical circles, and are now popular on YouTube. Vivien passed away in 2011, but her tremendous kindness and warmth of spirit shine through in her playing. Vivien is deeply missed but fondly remembered by generations of students and by many colleagues and concertgoers throughout Upstate New York.
Comments from friends and former students are welcomed.
