In 1993, the Sisters of Virginia Delta and Kappa Chapters gathered to discuss membership. They decided to not only seek pledges for their own chapter growth, but to seek pledges for a new chapter. The invitations were sent, the informational meeting was held, and the interest mounted. All were amazed to discover that there were enough pledges for two new chapters.
Meeting in the library at Monacan High School, the large group subdivided and began planning for the election of officers. Assuring each other that we would all support those who were willing to take these initial leadership roles, officers were elected.

On January 23, 1994, the officers were installed. The installation ceremony was one of historic significance because the twin chapters of Virginia Beta Upsilon and Virginia Beta Phi were now a dream come true. Sue Burgess, the Richmond District President, and Jane Painter, Southeast Region Grand Vice President, were in attendance at the initiation ceremony. Delta and Kappa chapters conducted the initiation of the new officers. Under the guidance of our officers, bylaws were written, committees were formed, programs were planned, and altruistic projects were proposed. Shortly after, Carolyn Thompson, president-elect passed away from cancer, reminding us to hold each other as treasures. Leslie Holden stepped forward and took the role of president-elect. In honor of Carolyn, the sisters of Beta Upsilon created a scholarship fund. Each year the scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who plans to enter the field of education.
