So, we took the kids out of school for a day, packed up and left for a long weekend in Letchworth. Where the waterfalls are lovely
In order to get her better acclimatized to car travel, we've been taking small trips. Just little trial runs: a trip to a far away grocery store, a quick jaunt over to the grandparent's for dinner, and finally a camping trip to a campground called Letchworth State Park, in New York State. Letchworth is a pretty campground which boasted great scenery (they call it the Grand Canyon of the East), convenient access to grocery stores (important when you forget the second cooler, like we did) and it's only two and half hours away from our house. It was a perfect trial run camping trip.
Let me set you straight. Elsie travels terribly. We can't drive with the windows open because her screams echo through entire neighbourhoods. I'm surprised we're not pulled over by police, children's aid workers, even just concerned passersby on a daily basis.
There may be some of you, unfamiliar with our family's trials since Elsie started travelling by car (ie: day one of her life), who don't understand the comment Kurtis made on our home page. How can we let Elsie, the youngest member of the family, dictate how far we drive in a day? Shouldn't that be up to the, I don't know, driver?
and the playgrounds are plentiful and fun for all ages. Although Kurtis needs to stay away from whirly things.
All in all, the weather was good. We had one day of rain but there was plenty of sun for burning...a favourite pastime of my boys.
Yes, Leo...it does hurt when you burn your own hand.
Elsie seemed to love every minute of the time outdoors with her brothers.

And what did we learn on our trial-run? Travel days with Elsie are all about timing. Hit the nap times and you'll be fine. Bugs are terrible and everyone hates them. One style of baby carrier is not enough. No one ever has enough socks or hats. Marshmallows don't taste good when roasted on fresh pine branches that are still slightly tacky with resin. Aidan can read a book per day when denied access to a computer. Elsie is still at the stage where a blanket is as good as a playpen and, most importantly, next time...DONT FORGET THE COFFEE AND BODUM!
