At long last, we have attained the final overworld heart piece! That gives us 12 hearts total!
And now that we have 12 hearts, I think it is time we went to the North-West to catch up with that old man in the graveyard...
Quite the hot tip! Now we possess the magical sword, which does some serious damage to enemies.
This sword is so awesome, it's sprite leans to the left at 20 degrees. How badass is that?
Ghost farming for some rupees and hearts. It's pretty nice, you touch headstones until you maximize the number of Ghini spawns on the screen, then you kill the one that was there to start with, and they all go *poof* at once -- and leave goodies behind!
[Editor's Note: At this time, a vote was taken on whether to continue to level 5, 6, or 8.]
Feeling his oats (because Lunk is not the Hero that Hyrule needs -- but the Hero it deserves, or somesuch nonsense like that), we wander our way back to Level 8.
We also pause to give Level 6 and it's wizzrobe armies the finger as we pass by.
There are actually three Manhandlas in this level. And you have to bomb all sorts of walls to actually navigate around in this dungeon.
And you need lots of hearts, because blue darknuts are right up there with wizzrobes for the most brutal enemies this game has to offer.
Ah yes, Gohma, appearing as a mini-boss in this dungeon (new to us because we skipped it's appearance in Level 6 for the time being). Another creature that got a fantastic Ocarina of Time makeover. You can only kill it by shooting it's eye with an arrow when it is open...
I screwed up moving into the room and a smidge to the right and firing my arrow to instant-kill it... But no matter, it's a one shot kill.
Awesome, we now have the Lion Key, which is basically a skeleton key. So we no longer need to worry about locked doors!
Hmmm... A stairway to take us to another part of the dungeon. Excellent.
Cryptic quote or mistranslated much?
Yes, you absolutely have to have bombs to get into the boss room in Level 8... And look, a 4 headed Gleeok. Ugh, this guy is really nasty in an enclosed space, because getting three heads floating around shooting fireballs at you is nigh-impossible to dodge.
Another heart piece and the 5th triforce shard, and Level 8 is done!
[Editor's note: At this point, a vote was taken on heading to Level 5 or 6.]
Level 5 is a neat place to get to, as it requires you to walk up these stairs four times.
Well, we took a bit of a detour after Level 4, but we're finally here. And I just absolutely love this green color scheme!
Hang a left and keep going until you hit the stairs. We're after the gold, Jerry, gold!
Going left, through the locked door, takes us to the treasure room.
Hey... This item seems familiar... Not sure if Super Mario Bros. 3 stole it from here, or vice-versa.
Going South through the locked door and bombing through the wall on the right yields us this fantastic chance to buy more bombs.
Note that I am even MORE confused at how an old man winds up in a secret room in a labyrinth with no entrance or exit with all the walls sealed. This is a bit ridiculous.
Dig...Dogger? As opposed to Dig...Dug?
Fortunately, I have the booklet that came with the game (also, if that failed, we also have the power of the internet), so I can at least confirm what critter he is talking about.
Oooh, a triple threat of Dodongos! Definitely more interesting as a mini-boss than just a singular one.
And we have this pleasant old man, also tucked away in a secret room, giving us what sounds like another one of those self-fulfilling prophecies.
So it's... A giant ear?
At any rate, when you play the whistle, it shrinks in size and becomes vulnerable to beat-downs with your sword and bombs.
Another heart piece, and a 6th triforce shard.
[Editor's note: At this time, a vote was taken on going to Level 6 or 7 first.]
Amazing... Not only does the whistle sound exactly like the one in SMB3, it teleports me with a little tornado. Classy.
The reason we couldn't enter Level 7 earlier is that "there are secrets where fairies don't live"... Which means that we had to have the whistle so we could blow it on this screen and it would drain the pond and reveal a hidden stairwell.
Obvious, I know.
Cool -- we still have that fantastic green background!
And... I get to bomb even more Dodongos? Awesome!
You bet your ass I would.
Don't feed the trolls, lol.
Whoo, a secret room of free rupees.
You have to bomb your way into the "eye" on the map to proceed, but at least you get the Red Candle for your efforts.
Which means you can now use the candle multiple times per screen, which is awesome.
Oooh, Digdogger splits into three this time when you blow the whistle. Crafty little bastard.
Whoa, another triple threat of Dodongos. Good thing we bought that bomb upgrade, eh?
Another boss room we have to bomb our way into, and it's... Aquamentus!? Wow, and he is just as easy as he was back in Level 1. Which after the gauntlet we went through to get here, I'm pretty okay with.
And that is the 7th shard out of 8... So it looks like our number is up, and to Level 6 we must go.
