How does the Van Der Graaff Generator Works?

The Van der Graff Generator is an electrostatic machine which creates electricity by using a

rubber moving belt that gathers all the electricity at the top of the metal hollow sphere.

Procedure:

1. Plug in the Vand der Graff Generator to an outlet.

2. Make sure you are not wearing any metal or have any electronics with you.

3. Make sure you are not touching the ground, be on an elevated surface.

4. Place both hands on the machine.

5. Stay still when the machine is turned on.

Scientific Principle:

is based on the discharging action of points and collecting actions of the hollow conductor

working the spray comb (which is at a high positive potential) sprays positive charges onto the other side of the belt and this positive charges are carried upward. The positive ions carried upward by the belt are collected by the other spray comb. Since the last spray comb is connected to the high voltage rectifier the charge gets transferred to the hollow metal sphere. As more and more charge is transferred to the sphere it’s potential also goes on increasing. When the difference of voltage between the metal dome and earth is very large it becomes difficult for the metal dome to hold the charge because of the force of repulsion between the light charges on the doom. As a result of repulsion there is discharge of charges in the form of sparks.
