You are not required to document a specific number of hours for service. You are required to document the completion of TASKS.
1 philanthropy oriented task and 4 individual tasks per semester are required.
Service Tasks cannot roll over to other semesters.
A Service Task could take anywhere from 1/2 hour to multiple hours to complete.
Documentation required is to log it into the Google Form provided in our Google Classroom. A picture of the student performing the task is part of the documentation process.
Attendance to meetings are required for active membership in NHS.
Absences are cumulative throughout the year.
1 absence = Warning
2 absences = Probation (Additional service task added to total)
3 absences = Dismissal from NHS active membership
If you know ahead of time that you'll be absent and miss a monthly meeting, please contact Mrs. Miller, Ms. Worob, and your officer. There may be a form to fill out for documentation purposes.
If you receive notice that you are on probation for absences or not enough service hours, you may contact your officer or send an email to Mrs. Miller if you believe this is in error.
Probation for absences on top of probation for lack of activity will result in dismissal from VHS's chapter of NHS.
If you performed an extra service task in order to make up missed meetings, your absences do not start over; they are cumulative.
SENIORS: If you are on probation during the SPRING semester, you will not be eligible to graduate wearing an NHS stole. Please clear your probation before May 1.
Frequently Asked Questions
As stated in Article 4 Section 2 of the by-laws, you must attend a monthly meeting to remain an active member. Failing to document your interaction with the monthly slide deck counts as an absence.
Not if you are counting those hours towards that organization's requirements. For example, if you're doing service hours for PALS and counting those hours for PALS, they cannot count for your NHS tasks. If, however, you're already fulfilled your service requirements for that other organization but are utilizing a serving opportunity, you may count it for NHS.
No. Service tasks for NHS must be within the current year. Aug-Nov for the fall. Dec-May for the spring.
This is only valid for active members. Students who are wanting to apply or are applying for membership need to include any service hours or internships completed during summer months.
Service tasks are documented through a Google Form posted in our Google Classroom. Make sure you take a picture of yourself completing the task to add to the form.
Reminder: 5 total tasks are required per semester. One of those must be oriented to the philanthropy area you chose to join.
Part of the expectations is that you will purchase (usually handled through dues) an official NHS shirt that you will then wear when performing Service Tasks. If other clothing is required as part of the Service Task (example: need to wear clothing that can get paint on it because you're painting signs), then you will be excused from wearing it.
Moving forward starting with the 2022-2023 school year, new shirts will not be required as we will be using the shirts designed by the 21-22's officers (no year on them). After a vote confirming this choice, we will make an official announcement about shirts, and new members will be given a chance to purchase their shirts.
