The World Before

Humans are not native to Valairium, they were brought here by the Wizard Valaria some 500 years ago and under his guidance they built a new kingdom. Valaria came to this world initially with three companions, the Hero Bord, The Priest Kand and the Paladin Arach. This small company made initial contact with the centaurs, dwarves and elves and thrashed out an agreement to bring their people to this world (ignoring the other races for now) and where they would settle.

Valairia then returned to bring his people through the portal and establish a new kingdom. Very little is known of where they came from, or why they left it. It is believed that part of the transition magic used was the remove any memories of the past from the people who passed through, allowing them to start afresh, unhindered by past experiences or traumas.

The truth is that the humans kingdoms of the old world had fallen to the Dark Lord and had no choice but to flee to a new place. Removing the memories of this failing not only allowed them to start with fresh hope, but prevented the Dark Lord from following them - although one agent did manage to get through.

Of his three companions, Bord founded the free city of Folkist, Kand founded the Chruch of the Eternal Flame and the Paladin Arach undertook his famous Pilgrimage of Arach that solidified relations between humans and all the major races of the new lands. They each died of natural causes after natural time periods.

And the humans flourished, under a series of excellent kings and queens, guided by the wise Valairia. With the passing of time Valaria withdrew from the day to day affairs of the humans and retreated to his inner sanctum. Valaria has not been seen for over 300 years, although nobody actually believes he is dead. The last time he was seen he handed a book to the newly elected Arch Mage, saying that it contained a spell that would allow them to summon him should they have need.

It has been roughly 500 years since the Passing and now the worst fears of Valiria are being realised, the Dark Lord has found them. During the Passing one agent of the Dark Lord managed to come through, but was detected and slain by Arach. His body was buried in a secret location where it was hoped he would never be discovered. Yeah sure!
