The Bear Trail
If the Cub Scout has not previously earned the Bobcat Badge, it must be earned before the scout hits the Trail toward his Bear Badge.
To earn the Bear Badge, a Cub Scout must complete the following requirements.

Complete one Bear elective adventure of your den or family’s choosing.
With your parent or adult partner, complete the exercises in the pamphlet How to Protect Your Children From Child Abuse: A Parent’s Guide, and earn the Cyber Chip award for your age.
Note: If your family does not have Internet access at home AND you do not have ready Internet access at school or another public place or via a mobile device, the Cyber Chip portion of this requirement may be waived by your parent or guardian.
After the Cub Scout has completed an Adventure, he is awarded the adventure's belt loop at the next Pack meeting.

Learn knife safety and earn your Whittling Chip.
Using a pocketknife, carve two items.
Bear Necessities
While working on your Bear badge, camp overnight with your pack. If your chartered organization does not permit Cub Scout camping, you may substitute a family campout or a daylong outdoor activity with your den or pack.
Attend a campfire show, and participate by performing a song or skit with your den.
Make a list of items you should take along on your campout.
Make a list of equipment that the group should bring along in addition to each Scout’s personal gear.
With your den, plan a cooked lunch or dinner that is nutritious and balanced. Make a shopping list, and help shop for the food. On a campout or at another outdoor event, help cook the meal and help clean up afterward.
Help your leader or another adult cook a different meal from the one you helped prepare for requirement 5. Cook this meal outdoors.
Help set up a tent. Pick a good spot for the tent, and explain to your den leader why you picked it.
Demonstrate how to tie two half hitches. Explain what they are used for.
Learn how to read a thermometer and a barometer. Keep track of the temperature and barometric pressure readings and the actual weather at the same time every day for seven days.
Fellowship and Duty to God
Do either requirement 1 OR requirement 2.
Earn the religious emblem of your faith.
Complete 2a and at least two of requirements 2b–2d.
Working with a parent or guardian, spiritual adviser, or religious leader, provide service to help a place of worship or spiritual community, school, community organization, or chartered organization that puts into practice your ideals of duty to God and strengthens your fellowship with others.
Identify a person whose faith and duty to God you admire, and discuss with your family.
Make a list of things you can do to practice your duty to God as you are taught in your home or place of worship or spiritual community. Select two of the items, and practice them for two weeks.
Attend a religious service, den or pack meeting worship service, or time of family reflection and discussion about your family’s beliefs.
Fur, Feathers, and Ferns
While hiking or walking for one mile, identify six signs that any animals, birds, insects, reptiles, or plants are living nearby the place where you choose to hike.
Name one animal that has become extinct in the last 100 years and one animal that is currently endangered. Explain what caused their declines.
Visit one of the following: zoo, wildlife refuge, nature center, aviary, game preserve, local conservation area, wildlife rescue group, or fish hatchery. Describe what you learned during your visit.
Observe wildlife from a distance. Describe what you saw.
Use a magnifying glass to examine plants more closely. Describe what you saw through the magnifying glass that you could not see without it.
Learn about composting and how vegetable waste can be turned into fertilizer for plants.
Plant a vegetable or herb garden.
Grin and Bear It
Play a challenge game or initiative game with the members of your den. Take part in a reflection after the game
Working with the members of your den, organize a Cub Scout carnival and lead it at a special event.
Help younger Cub Scouts take part in one of the events at the Cub Scout carnival.
After the Cub Scout carnival, discuss with the members of your den and your den leader what went well, what could be done better, and how everyone worked together to make the event a success
Make and present an award to one of the adults who helped you organize the activities at the Cub Scout carnival.
Paws for Action
Do the following:
Find out about two famous Americans. Share what you learned
Find out where places of historical interest are located in or near your community, town, or city. Go and visit one of them with your family or den.
Learn about our flag. Display it at home for one month. Say the Pledge of Allegiance and learn its meaning.
Do the following:
Visit a local sheriff’s office or police station, or talk with a law enforcement officer visiting your den. During the visit, take turns with your den members asking questions that will help you learn how to stay safe.
During or after your visit with a law enforcement officer, do at least two of the following:
Practice one way police gather evidence by taking fingerprints, taking a shoe print, or taking tire track casts.
Make a list of emergency numbers to post in your home, and keep a copy with you in your backpack or wallet.
With your family, develop a plan to follow in case of an emergency, and practice the plan at least three times. Your family can determine the emergency, or you can develop several plans.
Discuss with your parent or another adult you trust any worries you have about your safety or a friend’s safety.
If you have younger brothers and sisters, make sure they know how to call for help in an emergency.
Do the following:
Learn about the energy your family uses and how you can help your family decrease its energy use.
Do a cleanup project that benefits your community.
Elective Bear Adventures
Baloo the Builder
Discover which hand tools are the best ones to have in your tool box. Learn the rules for using these tools safely. Practice with at least four of these tools before beginning a project.
Select, plan, and define the materials for the projects you will complete in requirement 3.
Assemble your materials, and build one useful project and one fun project using wood.
Apply a finish to one of your wood projects.
A Bear Goes Fishing
Discover and learn about three types of fishes in your area. Draw a color picture of each fish, record what each one likes to eat, and describe what sort of habitat each likes.
Learn about your local fishing regulations with your leader or a parent or guardian. List three of the regulations you learn about and one reason each regulation exists.
Learn about fishing equipment, and make a simple fishing pole. Practice casting at a target.
Go on a fishing adventure, and spend a minimum of one hour trying to catch a fish. Put into practice the things you have learned about fish and fishing equipment.
Bear Picnic Basket
Do the following:
Create your own Bear Cookbook using at least five recipes you can cook or prepare either on your own or with some adult help. Include one page with information about first aid. You should include one recipe for a breakfast item, one for lunch, and one for dinner, and two recipes for nutritious snacks.
Prepare for cooking by explaining the importance of planning, tool selection, and cooking safety.
Go on a grocery shopping trip with your den or with an adult. Check the price of different brands of one single item, and compare the price of a ready-made item with the price of the same item you would make yourself.
Do the following:
With the help of an adult, select one food item, and follow a recipe to prepare it for your family in your kitchen. Clean up after the preparation and cooking.
With the help of an adult, select one food item and follow a recipe to prepare it outdoors for your family or den. Clean up after the preparation and cooking.
Select and prepare two nutritious snacks for yourself, your family, or your den.
Beat of the Drum
Learn about the history and culture of American Indians who lived in your area at the time of European colonization.
Write a legend.
Make a dream catcher.
Make a craft.
Make a drum. Once your drum is complete, create a ceremonial song.
Visit an Order of the Arrow dance ceremony or American Indian event within your community.
Learn and demonstrate ceremonial dance steps.
Create a dance.
Critter Care
Care for a pet for two weeks. Make a list of tasks you did to take care of the pet. If you do not have a pet, research one that you would like to have and write about the care it needs.
Learn more about your pet or a pet you would like to have. List three interesting facts that you learned about your pet.
Make a poster about your pet or a pet you would like to own. Share your poster with your den, pack, or family.
Do your best to train a pet to perform a trick or follow a simple command, and explain how you trained it. (If your pet is a hermit crab, fish, snake, or the like, you may skip this requirement.)
Tell three ways that animals can help people.
Tell what is meant by an animal being “rabid.” Name some animals that could have rabies. Explain what you should do if you are near an animal that might be rabid.
Visit with a local veterinarian or animal shelter caretaker. Find out what types of animals he or she might see on a regular basis. Ask what type of education is needed to become a veterinarian or shelter caretaker and why he or she chose to pursue this career.
Forensics
Talk with your family and den about forensics and how it is used to help solve crimes.
Analyze your fingerprints.
Learn about chromatography and how it is used in solving crimes. Do an investigation using different types of black, felt-tip markers. Share your results with your den.
Do an analysis of four different substances: salt, sugar, baking soda, and cornstarch.
Make a shoe imprint.
Visit the sheriff’s office or police station in your town. Find out how officers collect evidence.
Learn about the different jobs available in forensic science. Choose two, and find out what is required to work those jobs. Share what you learned with your den.
Learn how animals are used to gather important evidence. Talk about your findings with your den.
Make It Move
Create an “exploding” craft stick reaction.
Make two simple pulleys, and use them to move objects.
Make a lever by creating a seesaw using a spool and a wooden paint stirrer. Explore the way it balances by placing different objects on each end.
Do the following:
Draw a Rube Goldberg–type machine. Include at least six steps to complete your action.
Construct a real Rube Goldberg–type machine to complete a task assigned by your den leader. Use at least two simple machines and include at least four steps.
Marble Madness
Discuss with your family and den the history of marbles, such as where and when the game began. Talk about the different sizes of marbles and what they are made of and used for.
Learn about three different marble games, and learn to play the marble game “ringer.” Learn how to keep score. Learn and follow the rules of the game. Play the game with your family, friends, or your den
Learn four or five words that are used when talking about marbles. Tell what each of the words means and how it relates to playing marbles. Share this information with your den.
With the help of an adult, make a marble bag to hold marbles.
With your den or family, make a marble obstacle course or marble golf course. Share what you create. Invite everyone to go through your course.
Create your own game using marbles, and design rules for playing the game. Share the game you created with your den, family, or friends. Explain the rules and how to play the game.
With your den or family, create a marble race track. Have at least two lanes so you can race your favorite marbles against each other.
Make a marble maze.
Roaring Laughter
Think about what makes you laugh. Write down three things that make you laugh.
Practice reading tongue twisters.
Create your own short story. Remove some nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs from the story, leaving blanks. Without telling the story, have a friend insert his or her own nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs in the story you created.
With a partner, play a game that makes you laugh.
Share a few jokes with a couple of friends to make them laugh.
Practice at least two run-ons with your den, and perform them at a pack meeting or campfire program.
Robotics
Identify six tasks performed by robots.
Learn about some instances where a robot could be used in place of a human for work. Research one robot that does this type of work, and present what you learn to your den.
Build a robot hand. Show how it works like a human hand and how it is different from a human hand.
Build your own robot.
Visit a place that uses robots.
Salmon Run
Explain the safety rules that you need to follow before participating in boating.
Identify the equipment needed when going boating.
Demonstrate correct rowing or paddling form. Explain how rowing and canoeing are good exercise.
Explain the importance of response personnel or lifeguards in a swimming area.
Show how to do both a reach rescue and a throw rescue.
Visit a local pool or swimming area with your den or family, and go swimming.
Demonstrate the front crawl swim stroke to your den or family.
Name the three swimming ability groups for the Boy Scouts of America.

The Bear Electives
AFTER a Bear Cub Scout earns his Bear Badge he may begin earning Arrow Points in the Electives section of his book.
He may work on his "Arrow Point Trail" at any time, however he cannot receive Arrow Points until AFTER he has earned the Bear Badge.
There is a big difference in the achievements for arrow points for Bear. In this rank the Cub Scout can go back and do requirements from the ACHIEVEMENTS section of the book and use them as requirements for arrow points, as long as they do not count any requirements from achievements that they used to earn the Bear Badge. Unused parts of achievements that were used for the Bear badge may NOT be counted toward Arrow Points.
The Achievement requirements and the Elective requirements can be freely mixed to count toward earning arrow points. In the following descriptions, we will use the term "arrow point activities" to refer to either type of requirement.
GOLD ARROW POINT:
For the FIRST 10 arrow point activities completed in his book, the Bear Cub earns his GOLD ARROW POINT.
SILVER ARROW POINTS:
For EACH 10 arrow point activities completed (AFTER HE EARNS THE GOLD ARROW POINT) the Bear Cub earns a SILVER ARROW POINT.
As a BEAR Cub Scout, a boy may earn any number of SILVER ARROW POINTS, but he may only earn ONE GOLD ARROW POINT for the first 10 arrow point activities that he completes.

The following is a list of the ELECTIVES for arrow points. To see what is available in the Achievements section - see Bear Badge requirements.
SPACE (Page 182)
Identify two constellations and the North Star in the night sky.
Make a pinhole planetarium and show three constellations.
Visit a planetarium.
Build a model of a rocket or space satellite.
Read and talk about at least one man-made satellite and one natural one.
Find a picture of another planet in our solar system. Explain how it is different from Earth.
WEATHER (Page 184)
This elective is also part of the Cub Scout World Conservation Award.
Learn how to read an outdoor thermometer. Put one outdoors and read it at the same time every day for two weeks. Keep a record of each day's temperature and a description of the weather each day (fair skies, rain, fog, snow, etc.).
Build a weather vane. Record wind direction every day at the same hour for two weeks. Keep a record of the weather for each day.
Make a rain gauge.
Find out what a barometer is and how it works. Tell your den about it. Tell what "relative humidity" means.
Learn to identify three different kinds of clouds. Estimate their heights.
Watch the weather forecast on TV every day for two weeks. Describe three different symbols used on weather maps. Keep a record of how many times the weather forecast is correct.
RADIO (Page 190)
Build a crystal or diode radio. Check with your local craft or hobby shop or the nearest Scout shop that carries a crystal radio kit. It is all right to use a kit.
Make and operate a battery powered radio, following the directions with the kit.
ELECTRICITY (Page 192)
Wire a buzzer or doorbell.
Make an electric buzzer game.
Make a simple bar or horseshoe electromagnet.
Use a simple electric motor.
Make a crane with an electromagnetic lift.
BOATS (Page 196)
Help an adult rig and sail a real boat. (Wear your PFD.)
Help an adult repair a real boat or canoe.
Know the flag signals for storm warnings.
Help an adult repair a boat dock.
With an adult on board, and both wearing PFDs, row a boat around a 100-yard course that has two turns. Demonstrate forward strokes, turns to both sides, and backstrokes.
AIRCRAFT (Page 202)
Identify five different kinds of aircraft, in flight if possible, or from models or photos.
Ride in a commercial airplane.
Explain how a hot air balloon works.
Build and fly a model airplane. (You may use a kit. Every time you do this differently, it counts as a completed project.)
Sketch and label an airplane showing the direction of forces acting on it (lift, drag, and load).
Make a list of some of the things a helicopter can do that other kinds of airplanes can't. Draw or cut out a picture of a helicopter and label the parts.
Build and display a scale airplane model. You may use a kit or build it from plans.

Practice holding a camera still in one position. Learn to push the shutter button without moving the camera. Do this without film in the camera until you have learned how. Look through the viewfinder and see what your picture will look like. Make sure that everything you want in your picture is in the frame of your viewfinder.
Take five pictures of the same subject in different kinds of light.

LANDSCAPING (Page 236)
With an adult, help take care of your lawn or flower beds or help take care of the lawn or flower beds of a public building, school, or church. Seed bare spots. Get rid of weeds. Pick up litter. Agree ahead of time on what you will do.
Make a sketch of a landscape plan for the area right around your home. Talk it over with a parent or den leader. Show which trees, shrubs and flowers you could plant to make the area look better.
Take part in a project with your family, den, or pack to make your neighborhood or community more beautiful. These might be having a cleanup party, painting, cleaning and painting trash barrels, and removing weeds. (Each time you do this differently, it counts as a completed project.)
Build a greenhouse and grow twenty plants from seed. You can use a package of garden seeds, or use beans, pumpkin seeds, or watermelon seeds.
WATER AND SOIL CONSERVATION (Page 240)
This elective is also part of the Cub Scout World Conservation Award.
Dig a hole or find an excavation project and describe the different layers of soil you see and feel. (Do not enter an excavation area alone or without permission.)
Explore three kinds of earth by conducting a soil experiment.
Visit a burned-out forest or prairie area, or a slide area, with your den or your family. Talk to a soil and water conservation officer or forest ranger about how the area will be planted and cared for so that it will grow to be the way it was before the fire or slide
What is erosion? Find out the kinds of grasses, trees, or ground cover you should plant in your area to help limit erosion.
As a den, visit a lake, stream, river, or ocean (whichever is nearest where you live). Plan and do a den project to help clean up this important source of water. Name four kinds of water pollution.
FARM ANIMALS (Page 244)
Take care of a farm animal. Decide with your parent the things you will do and how long you will do them.
Name and describe six kinds of farm animals and tell their common uses.
Read a book about farm animals and tell your den about it.
With your family or den, visit a livestock exhibit at a county or state fair.
REPAIRS (Page 246)
With the help of an adult, fix an electric plug or appliance.
Use glue or epoxy to repair something.
Remove and clean a drain trap.
Refinish or repaint something.
Agree with an adult in your family on some repair job to be done and do it. (Each time you do this differently, it counts as a completed project.)
BACKYARD GYM (Page 250)
Build and use an outdoor gym with at least three items from this list.

Running long jump area.
Build three outdoor toss games.
Plan an outdoor game or gym day with your den. (This can be part of a pack activity). Put your plans on paper.

SWIMMING (Page 254)
There is something about this elective that is different from any other. That is this rule: whenever you are working on the Swimming elective, you must have an adult with you who can swim.
Jump feetfirst into water over your head, swim 25 feet on the surface, stop, turn sharply, and swim back.
Swim on your back, the elementary backstroke, for 30 feet.
Rest by floating on your back, using as little motion as possible for at least one minute.
Tell what is meant by the buddy system. Know the basic rules of safe swimming
Do a racing dive from edge of pool and swim 60 feet, using a racing stroke. (You might need to make a turn.)
SPORTS (Page 260)
In archery, know the safety rules and how to shoot correctly. Put six arrows into a 4-foot target at a distance of 15 feet. Make an arrow holder. (This can be done only at a district/council day or resident or family camp.)
In skiing, know the Skier's Safety and Courtesy Code. Demonstrate walking and kick turn, climbing with a side step or herringbone, a snowplow stop, a stem turn, four linked snowplow or stem turns, straight running in a downhill position or cross-country position, and how to recover from a fall.
In ice skating, know the safety rules. From a standing start, skate forward 150 feet; and come to a complete stop within 20 feet. Skate around a corner clockwise and counterclockwise without coasting. Show a turn from forward to backward. Skate backward 50 feet.
In track, show how to make a sprint start. Run the 50-yard dash in 10 seconds or less. Show how to do the standing long jump, the running long jump, or high jump. (Be sure to have a soft landing area.)
In roller skating (with conventional or in-line skates), know the safety rules. From a standing start, skate forward 150 feet; and come to a complete stop within 20 feet. Skate around a corner clockwise and counterclockwise without coasting and show a turn from forward to backward. Skate backward 50 feet. Wear the proper protective clothing.
Earn a new Cub Scout Sports pin. (Repeat three times with different sports to earn up to three Arrow Points.)
SALES (Page 266)
Take part in a council- or pack-sponsored, money-earning sales program. Keep track of the sales you make yourself. When the program is over, add up the sales you have made.
Help with a garage sale or rummage sale. This can be with your family or a neighbor, or it can be a church, school, or pack event.
COLLECTING THINGS (Page 268)
Start a stamp collection. You can get information about stamp collecting at any U.S. post office.
Mount and display a collection of emblems, coins, or other items to show at a pack meeting. This can be any kind of collection. Every time you show a different kind of collection, it counts as one requirement.
Start your own library. Keep your own books and pamphlets in order by subject. List the title, author, and subject of each on an index card and keep the cards in a file box, or use a computer program to store the information.
MAPS (Page 270)
Look up your state on a U.S. map. What other states touch its borders?
Find your city or town on a map of your state. How far do you live from the state capital?
In which time zone do you live? How many time zones are there in the U.S.?
Make a map showing the route from your home to your school or den meeting place.
Mark a map showing the way to a place you would like to visit that is at least 50 miles from your home.
AMERICAN INDIAN LIFE (Page 272)
American Indian people live in every part of what is now the continental United States. Find the name of the American Indian nation that lives or has lived where you live now. Learn about these people.
Learn, make equipment for, and play two American Indian or other native American games with members of your den. Be able to tell the rules, who won, and what the score was.
Learn what the American Indian people in your area (or another area) used for shelter before contact with the Europeans. Learn what American Indian people in that area used for shelter today. Make a model of one of these shelters, historic or modern. Compare the kind of shelter you made with the others made in your den.
Let's Go Camping (Page 276)
Learn about the ten essential items you need for a hike or campout. Assemble your own kit of essential items. Explain why each item is "essential."
Go on a short hike with your den, following the buddy system. Explain how the buddy system works and why it is important to you to follow it. Tell what to do if you are lost.
Participate with your den in front of the pack at a campfire.
Participate with your pack on an overnight campout. Help put up your tent and hlp set up the campsite.
Participate with your den in a religious service during an overnight campout or other Cub Scouting event.
Attend day camp in your area.
