Dear Esteemed Members,
As we all know, a catastrophic flood has hit the lower Mahanadi river-basin of
Orissa. The situation is grim with Mahanadi breaching its embankments at over 70
places as of now. Vast tracts of land have been waterlogged and lakhs are without
food, water, shelter and medical aid. The flood leaves behind a trail of
destruction and diseases. The challenge now is to bring back normalcy in the
affected areas. The Central Government has pitched in to help, but it is not
enough. The Orissa Government is struggling and trying their best. It is
disappointing that this disaster has not received adequate coverage in the media.
Statistically:
The inflow into the Hirakud dam was 3.85 lakh cubic feet per second (cusec); the
outflow was 4.97 lakh cusec. .
