Etiquette and Saftey: Bus, Museums, Sites, National Parks, Hotels, and Ferry Boats

We will enjoy our studies abroad when we remember the following:

I. Site/Museum/National Park Etiquette

* be on time

* pay attention

* tall people stand in back

* circulate to let everybody get close in small spaces

* don't photograph when speaker speaks; there will be time afterwards

* treat all speakers with respect

* show appreciation to all speakers

* be prepared to wait at a site for another group to finish their visit

* never pick up and keep anything at a site, even a small sherd can be a ticket to Greek jail

*do not jump on or climb on ruins

*do not pose for pictures next to any artifact in museums

*do not pick wildflowers in national parks

*do not scare the wildlife in national parks

* Treat everybody with respect.

II. Health/Safety

* take care of your bodies

* get plenty of sleep

* marble is slippery, even when dry

* don't walk on wet pavement if you can help it

* think about your feet: there are a lot of sharp things on the ground, and a lot of places to trip

*be careful when walking on old, narrow sidewalks; do not step on glass bricks (especially if they are cracked!)*** (see photo bellow)

* watch your step on archaeological sites; things collapse

* shoes: be sensible

* heat: watch dehydration; drink, suck on hard candies, wear head

* protection and sun screen

* food allergies, drug allergies, medication: learn the relevant Greek words in case you need to deal with any urgent situation

*if you are feeling ill or have injured yourself, please let one of us know

*Treat everybody with respect.

III. Bus

* be on it, and on time

* keep it clean and dry

* try to follow our routes on a map

* be prepared to listen to talks en route (and to sing)

*Treat everybody with respect.

IV. Hotel/Overnight Ferry Boats

*be thoughtful and considerate of your room mates at all times

*if you come in late, be careful not to disturb your room mates if they are sleeping

*be respectful of the other guests at the hotel, especially at night when they are sleeping

*be respectful between the hours of 2:00 PM-6:00 PM when many Greeks are taking a their afternoon siesta

*do not knock loudly on doors and try to avoid slamming doors

*do not run or yell in the hallways or corridors

*do NOT walk off with the key to your room in your pocket, especially on overnight ferry boats; leave the key at the front desk so your room mate/s can get back in

*Treat everybody with respect.

V. Schedule

All is subject to change, and much will (PANTA RHEI, in Greek ΠΑΝΤΑ ΡΕΙ, 'all things flow/change')

*Treat everybody with respect.
