How did scoring end up in an Excel workbook?
The goal was to make smart phone access to scores easy, and make scoring updates quick. Sports Fest scores were posted to a web site beginning in 2008, but they were a collection of hand-made html files, Excel files, and PDFs generated by Access. This scoring solution is run 100% in Excel (Office 360).
Only the first year of Sports Fest (1986) was scored without the aid of a computer. Imagine several staff members standing on the IM field writing numbers on poster boards. Since then, scoring has evolved through dBase, custom C++ apps, Access, Google Docs, and Excel.
