Speed chess tournaments are held monthly and occasionally bi-monthly. Time control is 5|0 minutes per player. Each round consists of two games between paired opponents, one as White, one as Black. Typically, 5 rounds are played.
Quick chess tournaments are held at different times depending on club interest. Time control is 30|0 minutes per player. The tournament takes place over two meetings with two games played per meeting. After four rounds, if a clear winner has not been decided, the following meeting will proceed to tie breaks.
Each year, a classical club championship tournament is played in February and March with a time control of 60|0 minutes per player. One round is played at each meeting, with the tournament typically consisting of two to four rounds.
The Chess Club also sponsors two simultaneous exhibitions during the each school year, where a strong player takes on all comers. All chess players in the Columbia area are invited to participate.
The Fall Simul of 2022 took place on September 26th, 2022, where Mikhail Antipov faced 24 opponents simultaneously. He defeated 23 opponents and drew Neil Fox.
The Spring Simul of 2022 took place on April 19, 2022, where Harshit Raja faced 18 opponents simultaneously and one additional game blindfolded; he drew three games, lost to Wes Herndon blindfolded, and defeated the other 15 opponents.
The Fall Simul of 2021 took place on September 27, 2021, where Gulrukhbegim Tokhirkonova faced 16 opponents; she defeated all 16 players in just over an hour.
The Spring Simul of 2019 took place on April 8, 2019, where Neil Fox faced eight opponents; he lost to Ciprian Comsa but defeated all the other players.
The Fall Simul of 2019 took place on November 4, 2019, where Neil Fox played nine opponents; he lost to Konstantin Koroliak and Jonathan Cannon, drew with Ciprian Comsa, and won the remaining six games.
