Instead of starting the year with a blast on his saxophone, on Wednesday, 4 February 2026, Andrew Young, renowned saxophonist, musician and composer, will speak to the first U3A meeting for 2026 at the DR Church (Helderberg), 82 Firmount Road, Monte Sereno, Somerset West at 10.00. The title of his talk will be “When I was a boy I had a dream”.
Andrew Young started his musical training in Liverpool, UK, at the age of 8 thanks to his music teacher recognising his talent. For years he was torn between pursuing a career in music or on the soccer field: time spent in front of the goal posts was as crucial as that spent practising his music. Eventually, however, music prevailed.
Andrew started with a clarinet and later progressed to the saxophone. When he left school, he joined the army to accommodate both his love of music and his soccer prowess. He went to the Royal Artillery Band in London. From here the world opened for Andrew and, after some years in Germany, where he realised that he could make a living from music, he ventured further and arrived in Durban, South Africa in 1989. It was here he had his first taste of being a soloist.
In the interest of his career he returned to the UK after a six-year sojourn in SA and since then has travelled extensively to the four corners of our globe. He has performed with many renowned artists and before royalty and presidents, and has won a number of awards. Happily, he has continued to return to South Africa! Andrew Young’s success began with an alert teacher, parents who cared, and a child who was eager to learn and had real tenacity and drive.
While you may have heard Andrew on his saxophone, this is an opportunity to hear the ‘inside story’ of a very ordinary little boy who had a dream, and has seen it realised perhaps beyond his wildest expectations!! We are sure, his tale will enthral you as much as his music does!
There is no charge for members; visitors pay R20 at the door.
Members may collect their 2026 membership badges in the hour before the meeting.
