Tullio Bruno Bertini Obituary
Tullio (Til) Bertini, age 80, 51 year resident of Millbrae, died peacefully with his family by his side on January 20, 2011 in South San Francisco, CA. Tullio is survived by his wife of 55 years Jeanne, sons Robert of Washington, D.C., Bil and son-in-law Anthony Vayos of Chicago, IL, brother- and sister-in-law John and Janet Daly of Snohomish, WA and beloved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Nello and Ada Bertini and his favorite dog Shamrock. Tullio was a husband, father, friend, son, neighbor, educator, administrator, author, chef, grocery clerk, coach, swimmer, card player, elected official, photographer, handyman, proud Italian American, golfer, athlete, Cavaliere of the Italian Republic, whose life truly made a difference. Born July 13, 1930 in Boston, MA, he spent his formative years in Diecimo, Italy during World War II. He graduated from South San Francisco High School and San Francisco State University (B.S. and M.S.) and attended the College of San Mateo and San Jose State University. He served honorably in the U.S. Army Reserve. He taught industrial technology at Capuchino High School and College of San Mateo and was an advocate for vocational education—he loved technology! He completed his 34-year career with the San Mateo Union High School District by serving as an assistant principal at Burlingame High School. He served the City of Millbrae on the beautification and planning commissions, chair of the successful Second Fire Station Bond Measure, City Councilmember and Mayor, and was an advocate for responsible and responsive government. He served San Mateo County as Community College District Trustee. He loved golf and worked as a marshall at the Peninsula Golf and Country Club. In 1998 he published his World War II memoir Trapped in Tuscany; he loved Italian cooking and produced a cookbook of his favorite recipes, and loved teaching the Italian language. A celebration of Tullio’s life will be held at the Millbrae Community Center, 477 Lincoln Circle on Saturday February 5, 2011 from 2-4 p.m. Arrangements by Chapel of the Highlands in Millbrae and private internment at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma. The family appreciates the love of relatives and friends, and the care provided by staff of Kaiser South San Francisco. No flowers please.
