Tuhituhi (its te reo for "writing") is a one-day larpwriting workshop aimed at giving people the basics on writing a standard one-off theatre-style larp.
You missed it!
Tuhituhi happened last month. We had 7 attendees, and we came up with a great design for the Currently Untitled Space Pirate Larp. Which will hopefully be seeing the light of day at Hydra 2018.
We'll probably run another Tuhituhi in early July 2018. Mark your calendar!
What
Like we said above: we'll show you how to write a larp. I hate talking, so we'll keep the lecturey stuff to a minimum. Instead, I'll post some links to pre-workshop homework - a couple of how-tos, maybe a game everyone has played - and have a short introduction and discussion. The bulk of the workshop will be actual writing: the participants will collaboratively write a small (8-10 player) larp, then read through it and suggest ways of improving it. The end product doesn't have to be good, but it will give some experience in the core skills of plotting out a game and writing character sheets.
Timetable: Start at 10, spend the first hour doing the intro and discussion, and the second hour planning. Break for lunch (there are cafes round the corner on Jackson Street), then spend the afternoon writing characters. When we're all done, we read them, work out what's missing, maybe do some tweaks. We finish by six and get on with our lives. Someone takes ownership of the game and produces it at a later date.
Gear: You will need a laptop or equivalent computer to write on, a USB stick to transfer files, and maybe some pens and paper to scribble on. The venue has no internet, so if you're addicted you'll need to bring that too. Finally, you may want to bring snacks, caffeine, or chocolate, if it helps you creatively.
Homework
Some links to get you started:
So You Want To Write A larp: Larpwriting 101: a video presentation by Jeff Diewald. Also slides. Jeff has been writing and running larps for thirty years (!) so probably knows a thing or two.
The Freeform Writing Process by Steve Hatherley. Steve is one of the founders of Freeform Games and has written a pile of games - you've probably even played some of them.
How I do it. I don't pretend this is the best way to write a larp, but its what I do. Also how to write a larp without stress, about timeframes.

Past Tuhituhi
The first TuhiTuhi writer's workshop was held at Petone Community House on 1 May, 2016. There's a report of how it went on Diatribe, here. The game we started writing, "It comes in pints?", was completed by Cody and ran at Hydra 2017.
