Surviving the Summer in Tucson

Most of us know that keeping our bodies moving is one key to a longer life. This page explores some hikes for early in the

day during Tucson's hot summer. Also covered are events at Arizona State Parks. Katherine's monthly column is about things to do

around the Five Points Neighborhood. Share your favorite pastimes during the summer months by writing to newsletter@uuctucson.org.

You can find free parking in downtown Tucson or on 4th Avenue on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Explore the nearby streets and alleyways filled with interesting architecture and art, including many murals like this one in the adjoining Iron Horse District. Mural by Johanna Martinez.

Some of the greatest nearby hikes are in the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area, a 20-minute drive from UUCT. It's a national forest so a senior pass gets you in free (still $10 for a lifetime pass, but a possible increase soon). Otherwise, vehicle passes are $5 per day, $20 per year. The park is open 24/7 so you can get an early start during the summer. The visitor center opens at 8 AM and the shuttle tours start at 9 AM. Trails range from a short nature trail to all day hikes to multi-day treks. Carry plenty of water for the longer hikes. For more information on Sabino Canyon, click here.

Other possibilities are with the state parks. Catalina State Park in Oro Valley (photo on right) opens at 5 AM so early hikes are possible.

Oracle State Park (near the town of Oracle) opens at 8 AM but the gate may be open earlier. Both parks have beautiful trails and interesting views. Click on the park's name for more info. See summer events and links to various state parks below.

See last month's Tucsonitarian for information on Mount Lemmon.

Five Points - Barrio Viejo Neighborhood

by Katherine Conover

Now that it is getting warmer, not only are the sites previously described good escapes, but so are a few spots at 5 Points (where S. Stone and S. 6thAve. and E. 18th St. come together) in the Barrio Viejo neighborhood.

You can start with coffee and a treat at 5 Points Market (click here for menu) which offers tasty, healthy food!

Then go cross the street to visit Philabaum Glass Gallery and Studio and School at 711 S. 6th Ave., where you can see not only beautiful glass work but also watch glass blowers at their craft. (Be sure to check the website for open times and best times to view artists at work. Also, be sure to ask about the striking, large silver projectile in the front yard of the gallery; it’s a good story!

Then recross the street for lunch at Café Desta, an Ethiopian restaurant that offers good lunch specials. You can order a generous salad with a tasty, unique dressing with a choice of vegan or meat toppings or you can order an injera dish with three separate toppings. You can check it out by clicking here.

Before or after lunch, be sure to stop by the small triangle park on the side of Café Desta to see the extensive mural honoring Cesar Chavez.

Then, if you feel like browsing, there is an extensive thrift shop just up the street from the Café. It is run by the St. Vincent de Paul Society and has lots and lots of books, among other things. It is located at 820 S 6th Ave and is open daily except Sundays from 9:00 to 5:00.

After that, especially in hot weather, stop at Lalo’s Raspados restaurant next door to the thrift shop at 804 S. 6th Ave. Their concoctions feature a wide variety of fruits and are very refreshing!
