PROJECTS

Current

Hwy. 24 Charleston Sideroad

2020 - Present

Our chapter will be working on a number rehabilitation projects to improve Brook Trout habitat on the Upper Credit River where the river crosses Highway 24. Projects over the next three years will fall into the following four categories:

  1. Increasing the riparian cover;

  2. Relocating the existing foot paths to reduce bank erosion;

  3. Increasing habitat by enhancing existing in-stream structures; and

  4. Educate resource users through signage directed at people who visit the site.

Designing and Installing Fishing Signs

2021 - Present

Our chapter has seen a real need to educate people about the fishing regulations in the watershed and so we spent some time and money in 2021 creating and posting signs that remind people to practice “catch and release” and to use barbless hooks. We posted 15 signs at strategic locations throughout the watershed and plan to post an additional 14 - 28 in 2022.

Quarry Development west of Caledon by CBM group

2021 - Present

There is a proposed gravel pit west of Caledon along Hwy 24. Our chapter is participating in the public consultation process and will be reviewing study results on the impact of the quarry on ground water and on any plans to dewater the pit by dumping water into the Credit. We have had early communications with CBM Caledon Quarry to let them know of our concerns.

Erin Wastewater Treatment Plant

2020 - Present

Our chapter is participating with the “Coalition for the West Credit River” group that is trying to ensure that there are strict water quality standards for the wastewater coming out of the proposed new treatment plant. The proposed plant will dump wastewater into the West Credit into one of the best remaining spawning grounds for brook trout in southwestern Ontario. Previous

Bringing Back the Brookies

2015 - 2019

Our Chapter's focus was to develop strategies to improve brook trout habitat in the Upper Credit Conservation Area reaches of the Credit River. Our goal was not only to improve habitat conditions but also to provide more opportunities for our members to get actively involved in stream restoration work.

West Credit Appreciation Rehabilitation and Enhancement (WeCARE)

2005 - 2007

WeCARE was a multi-partner community initiative that worked in and with the communities of Erin, Hillsburgh and Belfountain to improve the health of the West Credit River. The project focused on excellent water quality, fish and wildlife habitat and natural features, and helped residents undertake projects that enhanced and rehabilitated areas to strengthen the resilience of this valuable watershed. This 3 year project was supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation and chapter member contributions.

The Upper Credit River Rehabilitation Initiative (UCRRI)

1996 - 2003

This initiative began in 1996 after a detailed study of the river. Data collected on hydrology, hydrogeology, water quality, river morphology, biological inventories and land use, provided insight in prioritizing potential rehabilitation sites.
