The human soul is a being which is a spirit.
However, the soul within the body is not one thing within another. It is not a ghost in a machine.
Rather, the body soul connection is so deep that the body and soul are two aspects, not two things.
Body to soul is what matter is to form.
In classical Catholic philosophy, the soul is the form of the body.
So the human person is not two things which are body and soul. It is one thing which is ensouled body.
This is similar to how a statue is not two things of shape plus marble, but is one thing of shaped marble.
We say that the human person is not one part soul and one part body, but is all soul and all body.
Our bodies are souled bodies and our souls are bodied souls, which are two ways of seeing the same reality.
