Introduction to Ecohydrology
(Amartya Saha, Ecohydrologist, Archbold Biological Station, Florida, USA)
Intended audience: The materials are primarily focused at the undergraduate level (India/USA), but elements have also been used in teaching in village schools in Tanzania, graduate students in Nigeria/Brazil/USA and natural resource management and administration professionals in Tanzania.
Course outline:
1. Examining the Water Cycle; measuring/estimating and calculating a water balance for a catchment
2. Land Cover (vegetation) and watershed hydrology
3. Watershed geomorphology and soil water relations
4. Water quality, riparian and aquatic ecosystems
5. Water Resources Management, vulnerability assessment to climate change, land cover/ land use change, ecosystem services in maintaining water availability and quality
This is an ongoing program that
(1) holds 8 day workshops imparting the fundamentals of watershed ecohydrology, familiarity with online tools/datasets and open source GIS and
(2) has created a biomonitoring program for water quality based on aquatic macroinvertebrates involving a network of college faculty, students and individuals in Meghalaya/Assam.
