CHARACTERS IN CRISIS AT CHICAGO CONFERENCE

By: Rachel K. Hindery

Mariners, movie stars, fashion mavens and many more met at Chicago’s Palmer House Hilton in late March. Their mission? Resolve crises spanning more than 3,200 years of history.

This was ChoMUN, a Model United Nations conference described as “the largest and most competitive crisis- focused conference in North America,” according to chomun.org/. As they prepared for ChoMUN, Triton’s Model UN team was ready. “We’re very excited and we’re looking forward to meeting new people and really getting a sense of independence in such a high-pressure, high-stress environment,” Vice President Emily Urueta-Hernandez said.

ChoMUN is different from a traditional Model UN conference because delegates represent characters instead of countries. Delegates from the same school may find themselves in different crisis rooms. That makes ChoMUN a great place to hone public speaking, self- advocacy, and negotiation skills, Urueta-Hernandez said. “We’re going to have to deliberate – maybe even argue – about certain things to pass the directives that we’re going to have to release in order to react to these crises more formally,” she said. Urueta-Hernandez represented the first female executive of New York’s Macy’s & Co. in 1922. “Some might be on my side if I’m an executive. Some might not,” she said. “The fun thing is we’re going to have to compromise.”

Before the conference, Triton’s Model UN team members each took on a persona from “The Sopranos” TV show, and practiced staying in character while responding to specific scenarios. Just as each character has different strengths, each member of Triton’s Model UN team has complementary skills. Urueta- Hernandez could name who on the team is creative; who excels at public speaking; who is compassionate; who speaks their mind.

Fill out a member application at triton.edu/students/student-life/ or contact Model UN Advisor Dr. Elizabeth Collins to receive emails about a prospective members meeting this spring. “Model UN is always looking for new members for the next conference in the fall,” Urueta-Hernandez said. “We’re going to be graduating and we need new people who care just as much as us about Model UN to continue its legacy and the impact it’s made at Triton.”

What team members say about Model UN at Triton:

Melany Milen Atanassov: “NMUN is one of the greatest opportunities I have ever had. It gave me the opportunity to grow and to experience many things I thought I would never be a part of.”

Apollo Gael Gama: “On top of being able to study global politics, preparing for the committee has been a great experience to learn how to negotiate with others and interact in professional settings. I look forward to all future conferences.”

Mark Kouria: “Model UN has broadened my global perspective. The enjoyable experience of meeting people from diverse backgrounds and collectively getting to know each other was truly enriching.”

Jael Alejandra Rodriguez: “My last semester at Triton was my first semester doing Model UN and I am so sad that I didn’t join sooner! I got to meet and collaborate with the best people and have brand new experiences that I wouldn’t have had otherwise. Join Model UN!”

Emily Urueta-Hernandez: “I would have never thought I’d visit DC while in college, and much less for a United Nations conference. I learned to be uncomfortable and step outside my boundaries in this organization and will keep these skills wherever after I decide to go. I can’t express my gratitude for this opportunity from Triton and our advisor Dr. Collins.”

Jesse Ellen Whisler: “My favorite part of Model UN is the spirit of community fostered at conferences or even just in club meetings. Collaboration makes these big international issues we work with less intimidating and their solutions easier to envision.”
