The Dagbani language:
Dagbani, the language of the Dagomba people, is a Gur language (Volta-Congo) spoken by approximately 800,000 speakers in Northern Ghana (Ghana Statistical Services 2002, Lewis 2009).

As one of the 9 government-sponsored languages of Ghana (which includes Akan, Dagaare/Wale, Dagbani, Dangme, Ewe, Ga, Gonja, Kasem, Nzema), and the major language of the capital city of Ghana's Northern Region, Tamale, Dagbani is also spoken as a second language by members of neighboring ethnic groups (notably, Gonja) and migrants coming to the Tamale area from areas of Ghana or elsewhere in West Africa (e.g. Hausa).
