TMP-SMX, a Tri-Mentorship Program where Students Meet eXperts, was founded by two third-year undergraduate pharmacy students, Kevin Lou and Jane Lin, in 2012 with the help of Dr. Peter Loewen.
The program was designed to overcome two problems:
1) Certain residency research projects may require time-consuming data collection steps, limiting the sample size for the project and thus the ability to detect a significant finding.
2) Limited research and shadowing opportunities are available to undergraduate pharmacy students who are considering pharmacy residency in the future.
The term “Tri-Mentorship” refers to the 3 levels of participants that form the foundation of this program:
(1) Principal Investigators/Resident Clinical Preceptors,
(2) Pharmacy Resident,
(3) and the Pharmacy undergraduate student.
Through this overlapping structure, we hope to give students a broad learning experience and to provide researchers with greater access to student assistance and mentorship opportunities.
