The Technical Activities Division of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) is comprised of ten groups, consisting of more than 175 committees; these committees address various functional components of transportation, with a major focus on highways. Each of the remaining five groups concentrate primarily on a specific mode, i.e., public transportation, rail, marine, aviation and freight systems. The combined functional and modal structure creates the synergy among the groups that enables TRB standing committees to address the wide variety of specific and cross-cutting transportation research issues.
The Transportation Infrastructure Group (TIG) consists of eight sections including Bridges and Structures, Construction, Design, Geology and Geotechnical Engineering, Pavements, Materials, Highway Maintenance, and Infrastructure Management and System Preservation. These sections include 57 committees that propose research, share research findings, sponsor special activities, and provide a forum for transportation professionals to discuss today’s and tomorrow’s transportation infrastructure-related issues. The chairs of each of the sections are members of the TIG Executive Board, who along with the group chair, provide general oversight of the activities within the group.
