Quick Look:

The goal of this scenario is for students to make and create a health commercial (I think this can be done, both for promotion of healthy skills and choices, and as anti-ads where students show why not to use or do something related to their health.  Students will begin their commercials with research and “proof”  and then craft videos to share with their peers for critique.  When finalized the goal is to share these commercials with other classes and hopefully the middle school classes as well. 

Scenario:

Students will use research to promote healthy choices to others.  Throughout the process, groups will work together to access, research and share health information in positive ways.  First step will be to review Digital Citizenship, and review how to find appropriate resources.  

Next, students will create flyers for the school bathrooms (Flush Fliers).  Using Canva they will design and create these to hang in our school.  Once this first step is completed, students will be asked to work together in groups to create promotional videos to share with others and our middle school students as well.  Students will work within their groups to brainstorm and plan their content.  

These directions will be posted on Google Classroom.  Students will then start exploring ways to video and practice within their groups.  These videos will promote healthy choices and positive health habits, and discourage negative ones.   They will create videos which they will then share with the class, critique each other, make updates and then be able to share out with others throughout the school and community.

Reflection: 

The first step of this project was a lot of fun and the students really enjoyed themselves and got creative with their learning.  I wanted to make sure that I implemented the next phase of this project with thought and to really encourage students to take their learning to the next level.  For this reason, I will be working on the commercials after vacation.  With interruptions, assemblies, testing, and many other things happening, the week before vacation is not an ideal time to start something new and certainly not enough time to do this well.  We will be getting going when we get back from February vacation, and I am really looking forward to seeing what my students create with this!  


The learning that has already taken place using technology is the ability to get real time, current health information, and to filter out what is good information and what is not.  Now students can ask questions and get information that they may have been uncomfortable or afraid to ask in the past… all good things, but only if they are able to use their skills to make sure what they are researching is valid.  Using this information and creating fun ways to share it with their classmates, to question each other, and then to share with their school and their community takes their learning to unimaginable levels and it is exciting to see what else they can do!
