Barry Shiff was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, raised in Boston, and you can still hear the New England twang in his speech. He moved to New Jersey in 1978, and stayed.
His interest in art started early in his childhood, and he still tells the story of his delight with a small set of colors he received as a gift from his sister. However, he received his fine art training from the Museum School of Fine Arts in Boston, He studied life drawing with Don La Cedra at the Copley Society. He is an accomplished artist who works primarily in oil and watercolor.
When Barry moved to New Jersey, he met Mary, a fellow artist and the love of his life, and for many years, they painted together and developed their paintings of early 20th century towns and train stations in rural New Jersey.. They delighted art lovers and viewers with the authenticity of the scenes of days gone by. Mary died too young, but Barry has continued to paint and develop these themes.
He paints on location or in his Fort Lee, New Jersey studio. His favorite subjects are sailing ships and railroad trains and stations in New York and New Jersey. His rendering of old railroad depots brings them to life., and achieves wonderful historical accuracy by using vintage photos and postcards as reference. He also enjoys painting portraits of homes.
His work has enjoyed recognition in the United States and all over the world, and has earned countless awards including First Place and Best in Show. His artwork is in the permanent collection of the Easton Historic Society in Easton, Mass., and in many Library's and borough Halls and other State facilities and private collections.
Barry is the hard working treasurer of the Fort Lee Artist Guild, where his tasks include collecting funds, paying bills, arranging programs and demonstrators for the Guild, and working on several art exhibitions during each year. He is an active member of the Fort Lee Historical Society, and finds time to contribute to the Hackensack Art Club, and the Art Center of New Milford.
