This is usually used when the attacking team is in their half and need to get out of it and gain territory. Here is the first phase:
The next phase shows how the two supporting players are ready to receive the ball and be options for the next touch.
There are 3 things to take note of here:
The attacking player who now has the ball is still trying to draw in other players but ideally wants to target the last defender who made a touch to tire them out.
The last ball carrier now becomes the next dummy half. All the have to do is use their moment to carry them forward. The current ball carrier should dump the ball quite near to them.
The dummy half peels around and takes the place of the current ball carrier
The next phase is shown below:
It should be easy that at this point the pattern starts to become repeating. Notice the following:
The previous dummy half has peeled around to become an option.
Both defenders now have to work hard to get back onside
Here are some tips for running this pattern well:
The ball should spend the minimum amount of time on the pitch. If all the players are aware of their role, this should be straightforward
The attacking players receiving the ball should try and be almost level with the dummy half and at pace. Remember that one of the main objectives is to gain territory.
Generally speaking, slightly forward passes are often overlooked but emphasis on 'slightly'.
Sometimes, defending teams will try and stop this move by defending aggressively. It's important to not get frustrated and concentrated on the 2nd and 3rd phases. If performed correctly, the main defenders will be offside and it should be possible to start making ground.
If this pattern is run well and the defending team is tired, this can be turned into an attacking move. As is shown in the last phase, both defenders are up together and offside. If the attacking ball carrier receives the ball at pace, he has the opportunity to run straight through the middle. Because both defenders are offside, even if they are touched, they will be able to continue running forward. This can also lead to penalties for the attacking team.
