Science 9 Course Outline

Students are expected to:

• Keep a well organized notebook (this will help yourself!)
• Come to class prepared to work with ALL supplies.
• Think before you act and be responsible in the classroom
• Be helpful to others and allow for an environment where students can work undisturbed
• Be attentive during instruction
• Respect each other, the equipment, the classroom, the school and differing viewpoints
• Always follow Safety Rules, if rules are broken then student may loose their lab privileges and this may greatly affect their science grade
• Complete at least 20 minutes of homework or review every night

Required Supplies:

Students should bring the following ‘Top 10 materials’ to every class:

1) Three ring binder with LOTS of loose leaf paper and subject dividers

2) Textbook: “BC SCIENCE PROBE 9-NELSON”, students are responsible for the textbook assigned to them and will be required to pay the full replacement copy (approximately $80) for a lost or damaged text.

3) Blue or Black writing pen(s)

4) Red marking pen

5) Pencil(s)

6) Good white eraser

7) 30cm ruler

8) Highlighter

9) Agenda (get one from office for $5)

- Bring to every class as you will need it to sign out of the classroom, and to keep track of homework, tests and quizzes. Put your science buddie’s name and phone number in it.

10) Inexpensive calculator

Other Supplies: (may occasionally be useful) coloring pencils/felts, scissors, glue, poster board…other craft materials….

**DUO-TANG FOLDER** à kept in-class for daily warm-ups

Attendance and Tardiness:

• Daily attendance for Science 9 is required. Tardiness will NOT be tolerated in this class. (There will be consequences!!)
• A phone call home will be made for chronic tardiness and absences
• Work that is missed due to an excused absence must be turned in on the FIRST DAY BACK in school and MUST be accompanied by a NOTE, signed and dated by a parent/guardian in order for any marks to be rewarded.
• Notify the teacher IN ADVANCE for any planned absences, in order to make appropriate arrangements for work that will be missed.

Warm-Up:

• Each class will begin with a “warm-up” question that will be written on the board
• You are expected to come into class, obtain your “Warm-Up Folder”, and answer the question to best of your ability
• Warm-ups are review questions from the previous day and a good way to monitor your learning
• By keeping all questions in one folder, by the end of the course, you will have a very comprehensive Study Guide J

Assignments/Homework:

• Generally, there are minimal homework assignments provided students work productively during class time provided
• It is expected that students complete AT LEAST 20 minutes of review every evening
• All assignments must be neatly printed, written or typed.
• Each assignment must include an underlined TITLE, the students FULL NAME, and DATE & BLOCK
• Homework will be assigned at the end of class and written in the designated homework area
• All work is due at the BEGINNING of class.
• Late assignments:
  • completed at lunch or afterschool the day it was due; or completion of alternate assignment (**name on board = “lunch club”**)
  • A phone call home will be made for chronic late or missed assignments

Cheating/ Plagiarism:

• Although you will usually be working with a partner for labs and assignments, any work you hand in is expected to be IN YOUR OWN WORDS.
• Copying will result in BOTH partners receiving a ZERO for that’s assignment.
• Submitting YOUR OWN/ANOTHER PERSON’s work previously done in another class and receiving credit for it is also plagiarism!

Need Help?: Complete your work on a daily basis and you will have fewer problems

· If you have a questions, here is what you should do:

o #1: Re-read the textbook and your notes, look at examples

o #2: ask a friend

o #3: ask the teacher

· Extra help will be given after school and at lunch.

· At least 20 minutes a day should be spent on homework or review.

Conduct: Students are not allowed food or drinks in the classroom. Classroom will be tidy before leaving for next class and desks are to be kept clean. All cell phones, pagers and ipods/mp3 players are to be turned off during class time. There are no hats or hoodies allowed on in the classroom.

* Grading: Formal letter Grades will be based on the following percentages:

A: 86-100% B: 73-85% C+: 67-72%

C: 60-66% C-: 50-59% I/F: 0-49%

*If you have 59% or lower at the time of interims or have missing assignments by the report card, you will be given an “I” and an In Progress Report that must be successfully completed in order to have a passing grade on the next report card.

1. Please be aware that I only update marks every week or so, NOT EVERY DAY. You will be able to tell how current the marks are by checking the date that appears in the top right corner of the marks spreadsheet.
