Class Objectives:
Science & Tech 11 was designed to allow you to explore the interactions between science, technology & society. We, as a society, are greatly influenced by the scientific & technological advances that occur everyday around us. You will also be part of the process of creation during hands on experiments and projects. Many of you may not consider a career in science, but there is much to be gained in understanding how science affects your daily life. This course is designed to give appreciation for how science can connect your life (“science for non-scientists”), as well as providing your science 11 requirement for graduation.
Course Content: We will be covering 5 main topics this year and any other topics that are relevant and
important to you that you may suggest.
Unit One: Introduction to Science, Technology, Society

Marking Scheme:
25% Attendance & Participation
– 10 possible marks per class:
10- On time/present throughout class (no hall wondering); student expectations were met throughout class
5 – One of the above conditions is not met; student expectations were met with minimal intervention
0 – Unexcused absence (Severe consequences for skipping!); OR student expectations were not met for much of class

45% Projects, Tests & Quizzes – most will be open notes so keep a good notebook!
Since we will try to have NO HOMEWORK at night, please bring a scientific book, novel or magazine to read everyday so you don’t get bored when you finish early. Also bring a pencil, pen, paper and a binder to class. You can leave the binder in the room if you want since you shouldn’t have to take it home.
Conduct: Students are not allowed food or drinks in the classroom. Classroom will be tidy before leaving for next class and desks are to be kept clean. All cell phones, pagers and ipods/mp3 players are to be turned off during class time. There are no hats or hoodies allowed on in the classroom.

Grading: Formal letter Grades will be based on the following percentages:
A: 86-100% B: 73-85% C+: 67-72%
C: 60-66% C-: 50-59% I/F: 0-49%
*If you have 59% or lower at the time of interims or have missing assignments by the report card, you will be given an “I” and an In Progress Report that must be successfully completed in order to have a passing grade on the next report card
