Sketching

The reason behind learning to sketch or draw, was so I could then sketch out my own pictures so I could paint them. I had previously relied on other peoples pictures to paint and wanted to be able to it all myself.

So I bought a couple of books and taught myself the basics. One book in particular had lessons that I would emulate. I learnt a lot, and saw the things differently from then on.

One invaluable lesson, was to look at the negative spaces rather than the picture itself and draw those.

It was a great hobby to have when feeling unwell. I would often take my sketch book out to the garden and find something to sketch. Even if I didn't do much in the way of drawing I would be occupied and outdoors enjoying nature. When I felt strong enough to walk down, I would go down to the local creek. It was a good mood booster, out walking and drawing.

I had a time that I carried my little sketch book everywhere, I sat in coffee shops studying people. I realised then that drawing people really don't interest me, I love nature. However, at the time, it was a good subject and close at hand.

When I was a bit more adventurous I went into the bush and sketched a little there. With all intentions of painting something from a sketch, well that hasn't happened ....yet!

Sketching and drawing is a little different from each other, sketching is a much faster way of drawing, to get down as much detail as you can within a limited time. A drawing, may never be finished, especially in the eyes of the artist.

This sketch of a double centre rose was done, as you can see with a red pastel pencil, standing outside next to the actual rose bush within 15-20 minutes

- Practising drawing Orchids-

-Purple Orchids-

The end result from the practice session of orchids

- Wine and Bread Lunch -

One of my first proper drawings'

(it took what seemed like forever)

-Sleeping cat-

He was sleeping on my lap while I was trying to draw one evening. So I drew him where he was.

Considering he took up a lot of my lap it turned out pretty well.

-Ted Newspaper Studying-

Normally people move a lot, especially when you want to draw them. So practising with someone who was reading a paper and not moving much was a good way to start .

-At the Coffee Shop-

One of the sketches that I added water soluble pencils to.

-Random faces-

-Red Hat Ladies Meeting -

at the coffee shop.

- Murrumbidgee River-

at Urriara -

Only allowed myself 30 mins to sketch what I saw in both sketches here.
