In April 2013, Takemehomefromnarnia was founded on Tumblr by Kat, to fight homophobia in the One Direction fandom with education, action and visibility. A core group quickly formed, including Edwin and Molly, which regularly launched educational actions and petitions throughout 2013. In Fall 2013, volunteer Ellis and Li separately reached out to suggest visibility actions around the upcoming Where We Are Tour. Early 2014, Kat invited them for a brainstorming session and Project Rainbow Direction was born. The project was launched from the Takemehomefromnarnia blog in March 2014 and quickly became its most succesful action.
Since March 2014, we have encouraged thousands of LGBTQ+ fans and supporters to bring rainbows to concerts, to increase our visibility and create a safer space for LGBTQ+ fans. We developed posters, sold rainbow merch for charity, and organised the very first rainbowlights action in Boston in September 2015. Years of hard work by many volunteers made LGBTQ+ fans visible to the world.
During 1D’s hiatus we continued our petitions, and in 2016 we took our rainbows to seven pride events. In 2017, as three former members of One Direction launched their solo tours, the subscriptions to bring rainbows to the solo concerts poured in. Harry waved our flags night after night, we saw a barricade of rainbows at Louis’ shows, pictures of Niall hugging his rainbow fans at meet and greets were plentiful, and a Liam fan from Dubai made the press with her rainbow bravery.
We were nominated a Global Digital Activist by GayStarNews during digital pride week in 2018. Later that year GayTimes did a shoutout to "the rainbow project" when they gave Harry Styles an Honour Award for LGBTQ Activism for waving (our participants') rainbow flags on stage, thereby "making his concerts safe spaces".
In early 2020 we were preparing for a monster year of solo tours... As lovers of live music, the pandemic hit us hard mentally and we called a new hiatus.
Louis' Away From Home Festival late summer of 2021, the first concert of a former One Direction member after the pandemic, was full of rainbows, which were beautifully featured during the official livestream the following week. That same weekend, Harry kicked off his Love On Tour in the United States, where pride flags of all kinds continue to be thrown on stage and waved around.
The rainbows and pride flags are here to stay in this fandom. We will no longer do our regular signups, display participants on a map, or do shoutouts but we will continue to bring visibility to LGBTQ+ fans and to support and promote rainbow and pride projects during the tours of the former members of One Direction.
We want all fans to feel safe, welcome, and supported. The One Direction and related solo fandoms can often be unwelcoming to LGBTQIA+ fans. At TakeMeHomeFromNarnia we want to change that. We want to speak out to show support, and stand up proudly to make ourselves known. Because we aren’t just one in a million! We want to show who we are and how much support there is for the LGBTQIA+ members of our community, all around the globe.

You can still make LGBTQ+ fans feel at home in our community by participating from your home/city with anything supportive and rainbow (or other sexuality/gender flag themes) - signs, flags, clothing etc. This one is super open ended, so be creative. Take pictures/videos and/or write reports and tag us or send them to us.
For example, you could join the “Where Do Rainbow Hearts Go?” - Safe Spaces for LGBTQ+ fans action, print or draw our rainbow heart and take a picture of it in front of a landmark, building, significant spot in your home town or your very own safe space
You can also add our “Safe Spaces for All” Heart badge to your profile picture on any social network to show that your blog is a safe place for LGBTQ+ fans to come to.
You can reblog our posts and tell people about the project.
You can become a volunteer and help by working on the Rainbow Direction project or the TMHFN blog in general. To do that please drop us a message at takemehomefromnarnia@gmail.com.
Once upon a time we offered official Rainbow Direction Merchandise, proceeds of which benefited different LGBTQ+ charities and paid for the hosting of our website.
Beneficiaries nominated during the WWA-tour were: South America - ItGetsBetter International, UK - StonewallUK, Europe - ILGA Europe, US - Trevor Hotline.
During OTRA we supported Rainbow International Fund.
The merch sold during the Solo shows supports the upkeep of this website. It has been agreed amongst volunteers that should the organisation cease to exist, any money left in the accounts will be donated towards one of the above charities.
We launched the “Rainbow Direction goes WWA tour” and “Rainbow Direction goes OTRA tour” actions. To see what participants have done and achieved in 2014 ad 2015, you can have a look at our Where We Are tour masterpost and the On The Road Again tour masterpost
During the “Bring the YOU MAKE ME STRONG flag to OTRA” action, we asked you to create or print a flag/sign with our very own You Make Me Strong flag slogan.
For the worldwide showing of the “Where We Are: Live from San Siro Stadium” DVD on October 11th and 12th, we launched the “Rainbow Direction goes Cinema” action and called upon Rainbow Directioners in all possible countries to dress up in rainbows and show their support for the LGBTQ+ community of the One Direction Fandom. To see who participated, go to our Cinema map.
