I work at Fordham University, in New York City, with a joint appointment as Professor in the Graduate School of Education (Leadership and Policy Division), and in the Department of Theology (Faculty of Arts and Sciences).

Earlier, I've worked as Professor in the Graduate School of Religion and Religious Education at Fordham (2019-2025), as Associate Professor at Fordham (2008-2019), as Assistant Professor in the Religious Studies Department at Santa Clara University (2004-2008), as Visiting Professor in the Institute of Religious Education and Pastoral Ministry at Boston College (2002-2004), and as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Theology Department at Boston College (2001-2002).

I am currently the president of the Fordham chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). I am past secretary of the International Academy of Practical Theology (2023-2025), past secretary of the Fordham Faculty Senate (2024-2025), past president of the Association of Practical Theology (2014-2016), and have served on the steering committee and chaired the Practical Theology program unit in the American Academy of Religion (2007-2011), the steering committee and chair of the Practical Theology group in the Catholic Theological Society of America (2006-2010), and founded and chaired the Foucault Consultation in the American Academy of Religion (2003-2006). I am a member of the International Academy of Practical Theology (since 2007), the Association of Practical Theology (since 2004),  the American Academy of Religion (since 1996), and the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) since 2006.

By what practices do we take up with our lives? 

How are religious traditions involved in changing cultural conditions? 

A perpetual student of theological and religious studies, I am compelled by how what matters most to people comes about and is practiced, and particularly how the mattering and the practices are entangled in experiences, concepts and accounts considered "religious," "spiritual," "secular," or otherwise marked off as fundamentally special, different, powerful, or definitive. 

I study and teach theologies, philosophies, and religious studies of practice; sacred environments; religious mission in postsecular culture.

Work in Progress:

For All Gods: Why the Pantheon Matters: Going deeply into the relationship between the built environment and visitors' perceptions of the Pantheon in Rome, the Pantheon becomes a theologically rich space for considering the present and future of the Catholic Church in formerly Catholic-dominant spaces and for imagining how Christianity relates to its "others," past and present.
