Part 2: Making your mask
Materials:
- Two sheets of 11x15 white paper
- Pencil
- Oil Pastel Crayons
- scissors
- Stapler
- Cotton
- String/Yarn
Step 1: Determine the size and shape you would like your Sugar skull Mask to be by sketching an outline on one sheet of 11x15 white paper. Once you have sketched the shape of your mask on one paper, lay the second sheet of 11x15 white paper under it and cut along your outline- creating two identically shaped pieces of paper.
Step 2: On one sheet of paper, draw the details of your mask with a pencil. After you are satisfied with your design, Go over your pencil work using oil pastel crayons. Take your time and make your designs neat and intricate. Oil Pastel Crayons are unforgiving and cannot be easily erased.
Step 3: Lay your decorated sheet of paper on top of your identically cut blank paper. Use a stapler and staple the two papers together- The staples should be near the outer edge of the paper, and the staples should be no more than a half inch away from one another. Leave a four inch opening on one side of the mask.
Step 4: Using the four inch opening, fill the mask with the cotton. Use enough cotton to give your mask volume and dimension, but not enough to tear the papers away from the staples. Once you feel like you have the right amount of cotton in your mask, use the stapler to close the opening.
Step 5: Staple a 12-inch piece of string or yarn to the top of the mask. We will display these masks by hanging them from the ceiling in the classroom!
