Internal Migration and Labor Market Adjustments in the Presence of Nonwage Compensation. (With Raphael Corbi and Renata Narita). Journal of Development Economics, 2025.

We examine how internal migration affects labor market outcomes in Brazil. Using a shift-share IV strategy, we find that migration inflows reduce formal employment while increasing informal jobs. Due to wage rigidity, firms adjust by cutting non-wage benefits, leading to a decline in total compensation, particularly for less-educated workers and non-head household members.

Internal Migration and Religious Change: Evidence from Brazil’s Evangelical Rise (With Raphael Corbi and Fabio Miessi Sanches)

We study how migration influenced Brazil’s religious transformation between 1980 and 2010. Exploiting variation from international commodity shocks, we demonstrate that migration increased Evangelical affiliation and decreased Catholic affiliation. This shift was primarily driven by the rapid and asymmetric expansion of Evangelical infrastructure, facilitated by lower capital costs and a flexible organizational structure. A structural model confirms that supply-side dynamics explain most of the realignment. 

Women's Career and Care Responsibilities: The Role of Migrant Domestic Workers in Brazil (With Raphael Corbi, Delia Furtado, and Renata Narita) - Draft coming soon

We examine the impact of low-educated migrant domestic workers on the careers of highly educated native women in Brazil. Using a shift-share IV strategy, we demonstrate that migration inflows lead to increased labor force participation among women with young children. These effects are stronger for those facing greater care constraints, but are mitigated in more conservative or violent local contexts.
