The first phase of the project involved assembling the go-kart and modifying it to achieve remote control. This involved the following:
- Actuating the pedal and steering systems and building the driving circuits
- Modelling the systems of the vehicle
- Designing the controllers and building the embedded controlling unit
- Establishing wireless communication with an on-board computer
- Programming the main processing unit and establishing communication with the embedded controlling unit
- Establishing live video feedback
- Processing GPS and electronic compass readings
- Detecting static obstacles using a laser range finder
- Designing a GUI for the remote base station
- Establishing remote wireless control through the remote base station
- Implementing a path planning algorithm for the vehicle
