Achievements

Dr. Merlyn Mendioro (Left), Senior Adviser and Frank Daniel Canlobo (Right), Former President, at the 4th International Conference on Birth Defects and Disabilities in the Developing World held last October 4-7, 2009 at the Hotel Le-Meridien in New Delhi, India.

GeneSoc Resident and Alumni Members together with representative from three UPLB organization which constitute the Volunteer Youth Leaders for Health (VYLH) -UPLB Network served as the facilitators of the first VYLH-Philippines National Youth Camp.
Dr. Merlyn Mendioro, Senior Adviser and Daniel Canlobo, Former President, were invited by Dr. Carmencita Padilla, National Program Coordinator of the VYLH - Philippines and former director of the Institute of Human Genetics of the National Institutes of Health - UP Manila, to be part of the Philippine Delegation to the 4th International Conference on Birth Defects and Disbilities in the Developing World. Also included in the delegation were Dr. Eva Cutiongco- De la Paz, current director of IHG-NIH and Dr. Juanita Basillo, OIC-Director of the Family Health Office - DOH.

The UPLB Genetics Society members at the HUGO-AP 2008 Conference last April 2-5, 2008 at the Shangrila-Mactan, Mactan, Cebu.

Genesoc won two awards from the 2009 UNO Awards

Eight members of the alumni and the former President of The UPLB Genetics Society, Mikhael Danne Escalora (Ribozymes) were invited by Dr. Carmenita Padilla to participate to the Joint 7th Human Genome Organization (HUGO) Pacific Meeting and the 8th Asia-Pacific Conference on Human Genetics.

GeneSoc was selected by Dr. Carmencita Padilla, honorary member and the then director of the Institute of Human Genetics of the National Institutes of Health - UP Manila as the pioneer youth organization in the advocacy campaign directed to the promotion of health programs and public awareness on newborn screening, rare diseases (orphan disorders) and folic acid supplementation which is important on the prevention of neural tube disorders.
- Bukas na Larawan and Bukas na Kamalayan Award, 2009 UNO Awards sponsored by the UP Open Society which recognizes outstanding student organization activities. The recognized activities were the First BIO 30 Week symposium and exhibit which focused on Forensic Genetics.
- NYC Accreditation (given after submitting the 2008 Genetics Camp as the organization's entry to the TAYO Awards)
- GeneSoc participated for the first time on the 2008 IBS Freshman Orientation for BS Biology and MST students. The organization was able to distribute a freshman survival manual.
- The UPLB Genetics Society is one of the two UPLB-based student organizations that was featured by the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA) in their publication brief "Communicating Biotechnology Stories from Stakeholders" (link)
