We've been making fences for quite a while, below are some observations about how we typically bid and build fences, which might give you an idea of what we are up to.
Chronology of a Typical Fence
I've bid fences sight unseen, but usually I want to take a look at the site. Having an idea of where the fence is to go and what style you want is a big help.
After a site visit I calculate the cost and send an email just to make sure we are still on the same page as far as style, distance, gates, etc. If all seems well, I send off a 2 part NCR hard copy bid/contract form with all the technical details. Deposits are small, and after the posts are set we usually get half pay, with the remainder on completion.
The day we start I hope to meet the homeowner again to review where exactly the fence and gates are going. (good to put it in the right place).
We work to completion.

Once we begin to work our goals are, a strong fence, a well made fence, and a fence that looks good. Even a simple fence can be made better or worse depending on who is making it. We build fences not only for our customers but for every contractor or guest of your house who is ever going to look at it. Ultimately we also build your fence for ourselves. We will always know what sort of job we did on your fence.
We make a good living making fences and fences are hard work. If one is going to work hard at a thing, it's worth putting the effort into doing it well.
We generally work on one fence at a time and work on it from start to completion. We work unsupervised.
