The first documented reference to this FRANÇOIS/RICHARD family was in 1314. This list, however, begins with the oldest known direct ancestor of the FRANÇOIS/RICHARD family.
1. Nicolas FRANÇOIS
Nicolas FRANÇOIS was a cutler in St. Sebastien Parish, Nancy, Lorraine, France. [1] Nicolas FRANÇOIS and Marie Ann ALLIÉ had the following children:

* Although François and Antoine were definitely related, I have no proof that they were brothers. They might have been cousins. I have listed them as brothers due to the following facts: both François and Antoine married women named ALLIÉ (probably sisters); the names of the godparents of the children of François and Antoine demonstrate that they were very closely relate; and François signed as witness at Antoine’s wedding. In 1651, a François FRANÇOIS was mayor of the village of Vitrimont, just outside Lunéville, France. [2]
Second Generation
2. Sir François FRANÇOIS was valet de chambre for the Prince of Lorraine (Nicolas-1).[3] He was born about 1680. Sir François FRANÇOIS and Claude Françoise JENDOLLE(?) had the following children:
i. Joseph François Gabriel FRANÇOIS was born in 1706 in Lunéville, Lorraine, France. I have included him in this family, though I don't know if it is correct. His baptism entry lists Sir François FRANÇOIS as his father, but I don't know for sure if THIS François FRANÇOIS is his father. Godfather was Mr. Joseph Seublet, marquis de Lenoncourt, colonel d'un regiment de cavalerie dans les troupes du Roi T.- C. Godmother was Miss Charlotte Gabrielle Seublet de Mercheberg, fille d'honneur de S.A.R. (Her Royal Highness) Madame la Chanoinesse d'Epinal.[4]
ii. Louise Charlotte FRANÇOIS was born in 1707 in Lunéville, Lorraine, Lorraine, France. Godfather was the royal Prince of Lorraine, represented by Mr. de Marsanne, premier ecuyer de S.A.R. (His Royal Highness). Godmother was la princess l'alnee, represented by Madame Heudicourt, governess of the royal children of Lorraine.[5]
iii. Philbert Pierre FRANÇOIS was born in 1709 in Lunéville, Lorraine, France. Godmother was Marie Anne Allié, wife of Sir Nicolas FRANÇOIS.[6]
3. Sir Antoine FRANÇOIS (Nicolas-1) was born about 1680 in Nancy, Lorraine, France. He received a Title of Nobility on 15 Jul 1749.[7] He was official court pharmacist, and the emperor’s chamberlain.[8] Sir Antoine FRANÇOIS and Marguerite Rose HARMANT (daughter of Jean HARMANT and Marguerite ALARY) had marriage banns published on 3 Feb 1715 in Notre Dame Parish, Nancy, Lorraine, France.[9] They were married on 12 Feb 1715 in Notre Dame Parish, Nancy, Lorraine, France. They were married by Father Alary, probably the bride’s brother, cousin, or uncle. Witnesses were Sir François FRANÇOIS, valet de chambre de Monseigneur (the king) and Sir Louis Harmand, medical doctor. Sir Antoine FRANÇOIS and Marguerite Rose HARMANT had the following children:

iii. Rose Jeanne FRANÇOIS was born and baptized on the same day, 30 Aug 1718 in St. Sebastien Parish, Nancy, Lorraine, France. Godmother was "Jeanne HARMANT, daughter of Jean HARMANT, first pharmacist to His Royal Highnesses. Godfather was Sir Jean François Dubois, ecuyer, ancien conseilleur au parlement de ?.[12]

He died in 1817 in St. Marys, Georgia.[18] Louis Joseph "Francis I" FRANÇOIS dit RICHARD and Genevieve Honorine BIANNE were married first on 18 Feb 1773 in St. Marc, Saint Domingue (Haiti).[19] They were married for a second time on 28 Jul 1796 in South Carolina.[20] Genevieve Honorine BIANNE (daughter of Antoine BIANNE and Jeanne LEMOINE) was born on 12 Jan 1754 in St. Marc, Saint Domingue (Haiti), and baptized on 12 Feb 1754 in St. Marc, Saint Domingue (Haiti).[21] She died in 1821 in Camden County, Georgia.

She was baptized on 20 Sep 1774 in St. Marc, Saint Domingue (Haiti). Her godfather was Pierre her great uncle Chauvreaux and her godmother was her grandmother Jeanne Lemoine Bianne.[29] She died before 12 Jul 1835. 25 She was witness to her brother, Joseph Louis', marriage in St. Augustine in 1803. In 1829 she was living in or near St. Marys, Georgia according to a lawsuit brought against the Richards.[30] She married a man named GAUTIER. He died 1823 or before.[31] She died before December 1835.[32] Clementine Emelie RICHARD and GAUTIER had the following children:

9. Louis Joseph "Francis II" RICHARD (Louis Joseph-4, Jean-3, Antoine-2, Nicolas-1) was born on 12 Feb 1776 in St. Marc, Saint Domingue (Haiti). He was baptized on 16 Oct 1776 in St. Marc, Saint Domingue (Haiti). His godfather was Pierre Jacques DuBois, and his godmother was Marie Louise Cheauvreaux, wife of Rene Chatelain. He died in November 1839.[33]
Colorinda Josefa Antonia LEONARDY (daughter of Roque and Agueda COIL) was born 15 February, 1775 in New Smyrna, Florida. Louis Joseph "Francis II" RICHARD and Colorinda LEONARDY were not married. They had the following children:

Teresa, Slave Mistress/Wife #3 of Francis II (daughter of Dominic and Catherine Michelle) was born about 1801 in Florida.[38] Teresa was the daughter of two Richard family slaves. Dominic and Catherine Michelle were among the 22 slaves the Richard's brought with them when they fled the slave revolt in Saint Domingue (Haiti) in 1791.[39] Francis II was 27 years older than Teresa.

ROSS (son of Francis James ROSS) was born in 1808 in North Carolina. He was a "Second Seminole War volunteer officer and Whig political leader. By 1850 Ross was established as one of Columbia County's leading planters. He represented the county in the Florida House of Representatives in 1845 and represented both Columbia and Suwannee Counties in 1862-1864. He sat in the Florida Senate in 1865-1866.”[59]

Godparents were Juan Bautista Ferreira (his grandfather) and Juliana Sanchez.[61] According to one set of family notes, he died from cholera about 1853 on a Mississippi steamboat, and was buried in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.[62]The only “legitimate” child of Francis II. Juan Francisco "Francis III" RICHARD married Mary Ann (McDONALD?). Mary Ann was born in 1810/1811 in Georgia.[63] Juan Francisco "Francis III" RICHARD and Mary Ann had the following children:
