Anthony Storey

First son of George Storey

(1746-1783)

Anthony Storey was born in 1746, five years before his father moved to Fairforest, South Carolina; therefore we do not have a record of his birthplace. By deduction we know that it was probably Augusta County, Virginia; however, the possibility that he was born in Ireland must not be ruled out.

Anthony served in the Revolutionary War in Capt. in Robert Farris's Company, Colonel Thomas Brandon's Regiment, as a Private Horseman, from December 18, 1780 to May 4, 1781 (Record No. X1302, Historical Commission of South Carolina). He also served in the militia before the fall of Charleston (Record No. X3135). One Family record states that he was seriously wounded during the War, and this might account for his early death in 1783.

His estate settlement Is listed in the records of the Old 96th District Abbeville, South Carolina. It is as follows:

"Anthony Storey Estate Administered September 12, 1783 by Sarah, George, Henry Storey and Robert Farris unto John Thomas, Jr. Ordinary. Inventory made September 30, 1783 by Hugh Means, William Patton and Robert Farris, Sale October 20, 1783; Buyers, Sarah, George, Jr., John, George, Sr., and Henry Storey, Hugh Means, and William Elder.

Why Anthony's children were cut out of their grandfather's will with $2.00 is a mystery. Perhaps an explanation would be that they were grown men at the time of his death and perhaps he had helped rear them.

After the death of Anthony, Sarah Farris Storey married a second time, to James Finley. Their children: Sallie (married Robert Simerald and moved to Indiana); Rebecca (married Joe Park and went to Georgia); Betsie (married Hudson Dudley and went to West Tennessee); William (died in South Carolina).

GEORGE STOREY (11)

George Storey, first son of Anthony, and first grandson of George (1725-1805) has no equal among any of the Storeys for propagating the Storey name. He had ten children, all boys; 50 grandchildren, several hundred great-grandchildren: a total of over fifteen hundred known descendants.

George was born at Fairforest, South Carolina, on May 1, 1770. He attended the school at the Fairforest Presbyterian Church and was well-educated for his day. His family Bible, library and personal papers are in the possession of Mrs. James Ward (11669).

George married Margaret Mayes on Christmas Day, 1790. She was the daughter of James Mayes (1729-1818) and Jane Mcllwain (1746-1824). James Mayes was the son of Thomas and Jean Mayes of Donegal, Penna.; and Jane McIlwain was the daughter of James Mclawain (1713-1807) and his wife Jean (1732-1803).

George bought his grandfather's property at Fairforest, and also the property belonging to his uncles Henry and James and his aunt Nancy Storey, in the early part of the 19th century. He was considered to be wealthy and left each of his sons $1554.

The editors do not have the death date of Margaret Mayes - - she was living as late as 1827, as evidenced by a letter her son Anthony wrote her in that year. George married Isabella late In life, and she outlived him by several years. George died at Fairforest on May 19, 1857.

George was an elder and leader in the Fairforest Church for a number of years, and it is felt that he inspired the writing of the history of Fairforest Presbyterian Church by James H. Saye, a pastor of that church in the 1830's.

Though George spelled his name with an 'e’ in his family Bible and it is spelled thus on his tombstone, for some unknown reason he dropped the 'e’ for every-day usage. Two of his sons did not ever add the 'e’ to their names and consequently some of their descendants spell their names "Story" to this day.

ANTHONY STOREY (111)

Anthony Storey was born at Fairforest, S. C. March 30, 1792 and was educated at the church school. He served in the War of 1812 as a Private in Daniel Felder's Company, Hugh Means's 1st Regiment, from October 1,1814 to March 7, 1815. Anthony married on January 7, 1819, Margaret Means, who was born at Fairforest on August 4, 1798. Margaret was the seventh child of James C. Means (1758-1807) and Margaret Mayes (1762-1835). James C. was the son of William Means (1727-1799) and his wife Nancy Simonton, both born in Pennsylvania; and the grandson of John Means, who came from Ireland in 1724. Margaret Mayes was the daughter of Thomas Mayes and Jane Rutherford, both born at Lancaster County, Penna.; they were members of the Donegal Presbyterian Church before moving to South Carolina. Jane Rutherford was the daughter of Thomas Rutherford, who came from Ireland in 1728, following his sweetheart and future wife, Jean Mordah, daughter of Johr-, and Agnes Mordan, who came to America from Ireland in 1727. (See Egle's Pennsylvania Genealogies). Thomas Mayes was the great-grandfather of both Anthony and Margaret, malting them second cousins. (See Margaret Mayes, wife of George Storey (11)).

By charting the relations given for Margaret Means, Thomas Mayes is her Grandfather - not her Great-Grandfather as it states. Also, Thomas Mayes has a different spouse when mentioned under George (11) and Margaret Mayes, than he has under Anthony (111) and Margaret Means.

Anthony and Margaret moved to Greene County, Alabama in 1823. Anthony filed for the land on which the Hebron Presbyterian Church was built, and was a charter member and later an elder of that Church. Thomas H. Storey (325), in a short history, states that Anthony was "a great hand to running the Hebron Presbyterian Church.

The following letter was written by Anthony to his mother in 1827:

"Dear Mother, As it was your request to me always when I write to let you know in particular about our children, I will agreeable to your request let you know that Mary Ann has not forgot you yet and wants to know of us sometimes if Grandma aint comming to this country. She is going to school this summer again and can read pretty well now In her Textament. She also belongs to the Sunday School and has received tickets for attendance, lessons, and behaviour and has bought with her tickets 3 or 4 nice little books which she is highlypleased with and will read them to any person that comes to see us. Margaret Malissa can't talk plain yet and is full of her gab too but we can't understand much of It. James Means grows but slow and his feet get no better as we can discover. He can't or wont stand on them only in our lap and he don't like to stand there. He don't appear to thrive much and will generally eat hearty too. He can only crawl a little over the floor. our youngest daughter Is quite fat and harty . . (can't decipher). We call her Rebecca Jane. Tell Aunt Becca Park and Aunt Jenny I call her for them, and I hope from the last account we had from there that Aunt Becca will be to see her this fall. I add no more at present but remain your son and daughter till Death. May the Lord bless you all for his name sake.

Anthony and Margaret Storey"

Anthony and Margaret moved to Falls County, Texas in 1867, leaving their son James Bruce to look after their property in Greene County. He moved to Texas later, and his mother Margaret lived with him after Anthony's death, on March 18, 1869. She died on August 26, 1884. Anthony and Margaret are buried at Carolina Cemetery, Falls County, Texas.

Mary Ann was born at Spartanburg. S. C. in 1820 and moved to Greene County, Alabama with her parents in 1823. She married Elias Frierson White in 1847-, he died in 1851 and is buried at Hebron Cemetery, Mantua, Alabama. She moved to Texas with her children in 1867, and died in Falls County on June 5, 1893. 1115 GEORGE W. STOREY

George W. gives his life story in the following letter, dated 1910 at Lott, Texas:

"Was born April 11, 1828, In Greene County, Alabama. Was educated in the common schools of that day. Joined the Presbyterians in 1846, and the Masons in 1850. Came to Texas in 1851, stopped at Cotton Gin, in Freestone County. Was married on the 23rd of December, 1852, to Miss Josephine C. Douglas at that place. Came to Falls County in 1855, bought land and at present am living on same place. Joined the Confederate Army in May, 1862, under J. M. Wright, Company A. Gurley's Regiment, 30th Texas Cavalry, Gano's Brigade, Steells Division, Trans-Mississippi Department. Was detailed to work in the blacksmith shop, first in the regiment and later in the brigade, making horseshoes and nails and repairing wagons and various kinds of work; sometime prisoners were sent to me to be shackled with irons. I was not in any of the battles.

"Our command was in several fights. They captured a train of 200 wagons and teams which had supplies for the Northern Army. Our company had a hard run to get away with the train but came out alright, though the opposing side gave us a hard race.

"We were pretty well fed for awhile. Our command was pretty well fed though there were times when we were put on half rations. The mechanical department had plenty all the time.

"When I went to the war we had six children. I hated very much to leave them but there was a call for all under 35 years of age to go to the army. I was 34 and volunteered to go. Being at home a year after volunteering, we had plenty time to fix for making cloth. I got my wife cards and a spinning wheel and loom and she made all our clothing, and two blankets for me to take to the war. I sometimes think that the women had a worse time during the war than the men. It was hard for wife and six children to make their living, though I had 50 or 60 acres of land in cultivation and negroes to work it. However, they made plenty bread, had hogs for meat and plenty cows for milk and butter. In '63 we hired a negro woman who did the plowing. The year following we hired the same negro woman together with her sister, and together with the help of wife and children plenty of corn and some spare was made. Of course they had a hard time but much better than many others where the army went through the country.

"I have 8 living children and 4 dead, 36 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Wife died May 13, 1898, after a married life of 45 years.

Julius W. was born in Greene County, Alabama, on January 22, 1830. He moved to Cotton Gin (Freestone County), Texas in 1851, and on February 7, 1854 married Angeline Wills, born September 11, 1834; died April 27, 1905. Julius W. served as a Captain in the Quartermaster Corps during the Civil War. He was in the mercantile business at Cotton Gin, and was Postmaster there. He moved to Dallas in 1891 and was in the real estate business until his death on December 21, 1902. He was an Elder of Oak Island Presbyterian Church at Cotton Gin and of Oak Cliff Presbyterian Church at Dallas.

Obituary: Dallas Morning News, March 12, 1959: Boude Storey Served Firm For 51 Years. Boude Storey, 78, the Atlas Metal Works president and general manager who died Wednesday in a Dallas hospital, was a large-framed, soft-voiced executive. He had been with the metal works firm since 1908, four years after it was founded by his father, Millard Storey. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Boude Storey Jr. and John W. Storey of Dallas; a daughter, Mrs. W. E. Record of Dallas, and eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Highland Park Presbyterian Church, 3821 University, with Dr. William M. Elliott Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Restland Memorial Park. Obituary: Dallas Morning News, June 09, 1958. Millard Storey, 71, of 4524 Emerson, retired metal works executive, died Sunday in a hospital after an illness of two months. Storey was one of the incorporators of the Atlas Metal Works Company in 1904 and was an officer of that company until his retirement several years ago. Born in Mexia, Limestone County, Storey moved to Dallas in 1888. He attended the Dodson Military School in the late 1890's and was a gunner in the old Texas Miltia. Storey worked for a number of years on family genealogical material that he inherited from his father and was one of the editors of the Family Storey, published in 1955, that listed more than 6,000 members of his family in genealogical order. He was an officer in the Presbyterian Church for 50 years while a member of the Oak Cliff Presbyterian Church and the Westminster Presbyterian Church. Survivors are his wife; a son, W. M. Storey of Harlingen; a daughter, Mrs. Paul H. Speaker of Dalls; two brothers, Boude Storey of Dallas and Lanna Storey of Little Rock, Ark, and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Westminister Presbyterian Church, 8200 Devonshire, with Dr. Walter A. Bennett officiating. Burial will be in Restland Memorial Park. SAMUEL STORY (112)

Samuel Story was born in Spartanburg County, S. C. on May 26, 1794. He married Sarah Shields in 1812. They moved to Greene County, Alabama in 1834, and Samuel died soon thereafter. About 1839, Sarah moved with her ten children to Lincoln County, Tennessee. It is believed that Samuel's brother, Edward Farris Story, came to Alabama from South Carolina, and that the two families traveled together to Tennessee. Sarah Shields Story bought land in Lincoln County, Tennessee in 1843. Three rooms of the original log house, to which other rooms were later added, still stand In the Cyruston Community in Lincoln County; this house is owned by descendants of Samuel and Sarah Shields Story. Sarah was received by letter into the Swan Creek Presbyterian Church in November, 1841. She died on November 2, 1869 and is buried at Swan Creek Cemetery. Her will is on record in Lincoln County, Tennessee.

Sarah Shields was the daughter of Moses and Celia Arnett Shields. Sarah's sister, Martha (Pattie) Shields, married Edward Farris Story (114). Another sister, Emily Brooks Shields, married Daniel G. Storey (11J). Moses Shields was the son of Andrew and Polly Ann Bishop Shields, who came from Ireland and settled in South Carolina.

112J MOSES SHIELDS STORY

Moses S. was born in Spartanburg County, S. C. on February 22, 1830, and died in Giles County, Tennessee on January 1, 1913. He came to Lincoln County about 1839; and married, on November 14 1858 Susan Ann Zimmerman, who was born on March 30, 1839; died September 19, 1917. Soon after his marriage he moved to Giles County, where he bought land which remained in the family until 1944. He was a merchant ("country store", which included also undertaker) at Bradshaw, and a farmer. He was a deacon In the Swan Creek Presbyterian Church in Lincoln County, and one of the organizers and an elder of Young's Chapel Presby. Church in Giles County. Both he and his wife are buried in the Young's Chapel Cemetery. He served In the Confederate Army from October 18, 1862 to May 7, 1865; was captured April 4, 1865 and imprisoned at City Point, Virginia, and Fort Delaware, Delaware. His Family Bible is in the possession of Betty Sue Storey, Madison, Tennessee.

Edward Farris was born in Spartanburg, S. C. in 1798. He married Martha V. (Pattie)Shields, daughter of Moses and Celia Shield married (See note under 112). He sold land in 1838 and left with his family for Lincoln County, Tennessee, arriving in 1839, where he lived until his death in 1872. He was received into the Swan Creek Presbyterian Church by letter on October 10, 1841.

1141 MOSES CALVIN STORY

Moses Calvin was born on December 3, 1825 In Spartanburg County, S. C. He married on December 23, 1856, in Lincoln Co., Tenn., Mary Elizabeth Shipp, b. Dec 23 1832; d Feb 17 1916. Moses Calvin was received into the Swan Creek Presbyterian Church in 1845, on. examination; and was made a ruling elder on Sept 19 1890. He went back to Spartanburg in 1857, to help his uncle Thomas P. Storey settle the estate of his grandfather George Storey (11), and he took his father's share of the estate out in slaves and transported them to Tennessee. He died on Aug 3 1908 and is buried at Shiloh Cemetery, Dellrose, Tenn. His family Bible is in possession of Mary Ree Storey, Nashville. He served in the Confederate Army from Dec 9 1861 to May 7 1865, and was imprisoned at City Point, Va. and Fort Delaware, Delaware.

Matthew Mayes was born September 27, 1827 and died January 4, 1887. He was a member of the Swan Creek Presbyterian Church and is buried at Swan Creek Cemetery. He lived his entire life in Lincoln County, Tenn. He served in the Confederate Army 1861-65, and was imprisoned at City Point, Va. and Fort Delaware, Del. He married October 29, 1857 Lucinda Braden. Robert Storey was born April 28, 1823 in Union Dist., S.C. He married Sarah Ann Fryar (b. Dec. 15, 1828 in Murfreesboro, Tn.; died Sept. 12, 1919 in Tippah Co. Ms.) Robert (serving in Company L of the 2nd Mississippi infantry) was not killed in war, but died in the hospital in Richmond of "bloody flux". (I have the letter the nurse wrote to Sarah Ann telling of his last hours and his death.) He died Jul. 2, 1863 and is buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond. Addition from Harriett Jackson (great grand daughter) in Comments Mar 1999.

Thomas P. Storey was born at Spartanburg, S. C. and lived there all his life. He inherited his father's plantation, and it is still owned by some of his descendants. This plantation is a part of the original grant by the King to George Storey.

116414 JOHN CALVIN WHITE, b Jan 13 1880; d Jan 2 1954. On February 14, 1901 he married Cora Louise Gossett, and became the father of ten children. He was an officer of the Glenn Springs Presbyterian Church for more than thirty years as deacon and elder. He served Spartanburg County as a constable and game warden for many years. Hewas also in the mercantile business at Spartanburg and Glenn Springs for more than 25 years. John C. White was very helpful during his lifetime in the compilation of this history. EDWARD STOREY (13)

Edward Storey, third son of Anthony, was born at Spartanburg, S. C. in 1772 and married Margaret at Spartanburg in 1795. They moved to Jackson County, Georgia around the turn of the century. He was a charter member and an elder of the Thyatira Presbyterian Church. He moved later to Newnan, Georgia, and is buried there. Margaret Thompson was the daughter of John and Margaret Ann Wallace Thompson, who were married in 1766

John Thompson was born in 1744; he was captured by the British during the Revolution, as was his son Andrew, and it is believed that he died during his captivity. Margaret Ann Wallace Thompson was born in 1744 and died in 1780.

John Thompson Storey of Chattooga County, Georgia was born in 1796 at Spartanburg, S. C. For some years he was a member of the Georgia Legislature. He was a Colonel of the Militia, serving in the numerous Indian wars. He moved to Gonzales County, Texas, near Monthalia, in 1844, and saw service in the Mexican War. He died on November 11, 1858. Lucy McLester, his wife, was the daughter of John McLester and Araminta Gray, the.latter being of the Gray family of England. Lucy was born at Buncombe County, N. C. on September 25, 1797, and died at Lockhart, Texas, on August 15, 1874.

Richard was born in Jackson Countv Ga., on February 1, 1823. He moved to Texas with his parents in 1844, but returned to Georgia shortly thereafter - the only child of this branch to return to Georgia. He served as Secretary to the Governor of Georgia. He served as a Captain in Georgia during the Civil War, and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He died on June 19, 1892. Edward Farris Storey, sixth child and fifth son of John Thompson and Lucy Storey, married on January 2, 1849 Adella Coloway, d Jan 10 1852 in Georgetown, Texas. in 1853 Edward F. with his little daughter and a part of immigrants, went byland, from Georgetown, Texas through Mexico to Massatland on the Pacific Coast; thence by water to California, and settled in Visaha, more probably Visalia, Tulare County. On June 7, more probably June 2, 1860 he was killed by Indians in battle near Pyramid Lake, Nevada. He was in command at the time of a volunteer company called the Virginia City Rifles. He is buried in Virginia City in what is now Storey County, named for him. (Added Dec 8 2006) His daughter:

1317 JAMES GRAY STOREY

James Gray was born on July 30, 1830 near Summerville, Georgia, and died January 22, 1911 in San Marcos, Texas. He married on September 28, 1853 Sarah Branch Cheatham, b Sept 28 1837 in Washington. Ark.; d May 17 1907 in San Marcos, Texas. She was the daughter of Judge Henry Clay Cheatham and Martha Branch Cheatham, who came from Virginia to Lockhart, Texas via Kentucky and Arkansas, in 1846.

Captain James Gray Storey was District Clerk in 1862. He enlisted in the Confederate Army in Company A, 32nd'Texas Cavalry, Co. A, C. P. Woods' Regiment. He was County Judge until removed by Federal authority. He was a member of the 17th Legislature of Texas in 1880; became County Clerk in 1888 and served for eighteen years. The children of James Gray and Sarah Cheatham Storey:

From "First Texas Families": "Leonidas Jefferson Storey, son of John Thompson and Lucy (McLester) Storey, was born on October 6, 1834 in Chattooga County, Ga. The family moved to Gonzales, Texas in 1845 and two years later to Lockhart. Storey attended Austin College one term, read law, and began practicing in Lockhart in 1858. In 1859 he married Lucinda J. Ellison; they had ten children.

During the Civil War he rose from Second Lieutenant to Captain in Company B, 26th Texas Cavalry, Texas B. de Brayts Brigade. From 1873 to 1875, Storey represented Caldwell County in the Texas Legislature, and from 1876 to 1880 was a State Senator from the 31st District. He became Lt. Governor in 1880. In 1892, Governor James Hogg appointed Storey to the Railroad Commission. He continued in the position after it became elective, and on January 20, 1903 he was elected chairman and served in that capacity until his death on March 28, 1909. Nancy was born August 16, 1804, and married on September 10, 1823, William Hemphill Cleghorn, born November 6, 1798. Nancy is buried at Summerville, Georgia. Nancy Cantor and William Cleghorn were red-headed, and all of their children had red hair. William was the Indian Agent in the western part of Georgia and the Indian women approached Nancy often to trade some of her red-headed babies for some Indian babies. The story also goes that William was approached by several Indian braves to trade red-headed Nancy for some of their squaws.

1371 JAMES AUGUSTUS STOREY

James A. was born January 7, 1836 and died September 26, 1884. He was brought from Georgia by his uncle, Col. Alonzo Groves Storey (139) to live in Talladega, Alabama and work in his store there. At that time the firm was "Cunningham & Storey"; later it became "A. G. and J. A. Storey". James Augustus married Margaret, daughter of Andrew Cunningham, one of the partners in the firm; and his brother William Edward married Fannie, Margaret's sister. Their uncle Alonzo Groves Storey (139) married Cynthia Cunningham, a cousin of Andrew. All three brothers, James A., Joseph M. and William E. served in the Confederate Army. James A. and Margaret Isabella Cunningham, b Oct 31 1836, d Jun 13 1885, were married on May 24, 1860. Their children:

1373 WILLIAM EDWARD STOREY, b 1843; d 1910. Moved to Talladega, Alabama and operated a farm near the town. He married Fannie Cunningham.

138 EDWARD MADISON STOREY, b May 29, 1812. He married Dorothy Ann Owens.

139 ALONZO GROVES STOREY, b Apr 9, 1815. He lived at Talladega, Alabama, and married Cynthia Cunningham. They had no children.
